checking indexing

First ensure your flash hider is machined correctly with dovetail on center. Do this by visual inspection. MANY chinese versions are wonky.
-place action in soft jawed vice or barrel vice.
-Take the front sight blade off.
-Use two long (3 to 4foot) staight edges , one balanced on the flash hider dovetail and one on the flat edge immediately behind the rear sight.
-visually inspect for parallelism between the bars.
-double check with appropriate bubble or digital level device.

Assuming that the front sight base is machined true: I use a machinist's level on the flat table behind the rear sight, and on the flat of the front sight base (fs removed). Bubble should be the same. A pair of strraight edges can be used as well. If they are parallel, you're good to go.
If index is badly off, you can see it pretty easily.
If the rs is centered, and the fs is centered on its base, and wind zero is significantly off, this suggests there is a problem.

Thanks guys. I have a dlask chopped M14, thread with pics somewhere down the page. My initial impression was that the gas lock front sight was tilted a little off to the left, and I've had a couple of shooters point it out as well.

By holding the gas lock all the way to the left at the base while tightening the gas plug, I've managed to create a simple fix (I hope) But, because of this left/right play, I would like to find and mark the center line.

Thanks for the instructions.

Aha, it may not be barrel index, it's probably a gas system out of index. Not repairable.
This is caused by the splines on the cylinder being out of index with the gas plug hole. A common issue with chinese cylinders and is the reason I do not supply or install gas lock front sights on chinese rifles. If you must use a gas lock front sight, I highly recommend replacing the gas cylinder with a USGI, springfield or 7.62firearms cylinder that are known to be correctly machined.
I had mentioned this to Dlask prior to them making their GLFS version... But they went ahead anyways.
This common problem is why I came up with the UFS modification of Tig welding the front sight base dovetail directly to the forward gas cylinder ring.

Actually I have replaced the gas cylinder with one from 7.62. My Norc one was bad in the way that you mentioned, but fortunately I figured it out before I sent them the rifle.

The problem is, the lower hole in the gas lock is larger then the gas plug, so when you reassemble the gas system, it is possible that you may not get things lined up exactly as it was before. I asked about the indexing because it seems as though I have to move the base of the gas lock all the way over to the left as I tighten the gas plug in order to index the front sight properly. Since I am only eyeballing, there is room for error.

Assuming that I am able to index the front sight by playing with the gas lock alignment while screwing in the gas plug, if I mark a center line, then future problems solved. This is where I needed to be sure of how to index properly.

My rifle functions fine but the index is off about 3min. I know perfect alignment is Ideal but how much misalignment is acceptable?
