Yes the Remington 700 MLR / Police is probably the cheapest option at ~$1500 for the bare bones rifle, but the factory barrel is too short to get the full potential out of the .338 Lapua ; it would be an awsome bear gun though!

Also, if you are shooting in the maritimes at the longest distances available to you, the .338 Lapua will not even be warming up yet. I suggest a .300 Win Mag

If you want a cheap 338 Lapua, take a picture of one, or copy and paste one to your home page,, I know I can't afford to buy one or shoot one.

There a couples at PD for $1499, very good price, mag, Aluminum bedding. all you need is mount and scope...

I have to laugh at that....really I do. Cheap & 338 Lapua don't belong in the same sentence together.

At $5/rnd I don't think the cost of the rifle is going to offset the ammo costs.

No but it is alot easier to get in the 338 game spending 1500 on a rifle instead of 3800 plus.

For approximately $2.60+ per round you can reload for 338 Lapua and that includes replacing the barrel after 1500 rounds or whenever it starts to walk on you. Yes, there are better ballistics or equal ballistics that can be achieved with 25% less powder and a lighter vld projectile. Heck, we all know that there's even more accurate cartridges than the Lapua. The only problem is.....there's never a replacement for displacement.........and once you pull the tail on one of these over priced barrel burnin' beasts you'll be hooked. Oh, and a well designed muzzle brake will make rifles chambered in this cartridge feel like you're shooting a 308....(not for the guy beside you though....).

I find it funny that every time someone seeks info. on a .338 Lapua somebody always chimes in with 7mm this, 6.5mm that. Those kind of answers belong in threads dealing with 7mm or 6.5mm rifles. As to the original question I would agree with several previous posters with the Rem MLR being your best "cheap" choice for a .338 Lapua. I just bought a TRG42 to go with my TRG22 and am looking forward to shooting it.

I shoot a Sako in 338 LM. Once you have the brass and dies, it really isn't any more expensive to reload then a 338 RUM (which is it's ballistic twin). 338 bullets are 338 bullets, no matter what case you put them in. As mentioned, the Rem rifle is about your least expensive option (I may replace my Sako with one, more options for the rifle and accessories). Buy one and enjoy it. When you need to replace the barrel, there are lots of options. FWIW - dan

Why would you only get 1500 rnds from a 338 Lapua barrel?
They last ALOT longer than that, at least the high quality barrels i use to build a rifle with.

I agree, it seems everytime someone asks about a caliber bigger than 7mm someone chimes in with blather about baby sized calibers doing what big calibers do, but they miss the point totally of why some of us prefer the boomers. I guess for the same reasons not eveyone is happy driving a 4 banger auto either.
