Chest Rigs and Mags for your Black Rifle

But it is modular, it has a pouch that can hold a canteen or a can for the nine, or it can be swapped out for a pouch that will only hold a canteen.

Say it with me M O D U L A R.

here's mine. i was wearing an CIRAS and found it too bulky so i switched to the esstac. i would carry 12 40mm in the utility dump pouch if the m203 was on the rifle.

I've never had good luck with vests. I'm a small frame guy and could never find one that fits properly. Also, they get very hot. You're essentially strapping on a heavy jacket. Chest rigs are quicker to get on, infinitely adjustable for size, can usually hold more, and tend to be more comfortable.

at some point depending on application would a vest not be a better choice? or is nobody concerned with training for a scenario where kevlar and ballistic plates would be a good idea to wear.

I would want to be proficient with both, buy maybe I am weird

Ok guys i don't know but personally i think carrying six mags is a whole lot no? I'm not in the military but i've been to the middle east for some work with bae and when we were being escorted by some british private security guys, they had a radio, a cell phono, an ak, 1 mag in the gun, 3 mags and a grenade stuffed in the pockets of their coats and a pistol stuffed out of sight in their belt. No holsters, no helmet, no mag pouches, no bullet proof vest, nothing that would identify them really as security aside from the fact that they were carrying an ak and frankly an ak over there is like a tuque over here!

They didn't look like Rambo either, regular 30 year old guys with wife and kids back in Liverpool with regular physiques, maybe just a little bit more in shape than me but thats it.

Am i missing something?

depends on what your job or mission is IMO the way you load out, sounds like the security detail was more concerned with not sticking out^

Armor is best carried in a plate carrier. When I say "vest" I mean a load bearing vest. Not a bullet proof vest.

Vest with a zipper is the fastest to don. Chest rig is hard to don fast as the buckles are on the side and at the back, unless it is one of those split front designs. When you pick up a chest rig, the webbing is always curled up so you need to sort it out visually and find the right loop to put your body part through. Easy to do when there is no time pressure, but when there is a rush it is easier to use gross motor skill to wear a vest.

Got a BFG rackminus with two triple helium whisper pouches for Xmas (big thanks to One Shot Tactical!!!), really like the low profile of this set up! slim and light weight. Snow is down hard here in NL so getting to the range is tricky, but will post my findings after I put it through some good hard use. Till then let's keep this thread alive, love hearing about what others are running!

4 x AK mags overseas = 120 rnds

6 x Canadian mags here = 30rnds

but when there is a rush it is easier to use gross motor skill to wear a vest.

Advantages of chest rigs out way the ease of putting a vest on.

Not only what Farmboy said, but the main thing you're missing is most (I assume) shooters that use a tacvest of sorts assume it as part of their bug out gear.

So having even 6 mags for more or less the rest of your rifles life isn't nearly enough (on mine I loaded it with 10 mags plus one in rifle with a few spare mags loaded in my backpack)

It all has to do with support. If you have a FOB close enough to have a resupply in, then yes. 3+1 is more then enough. Then again in a longer fight those 3+1 will dry out fast unless theyre all crack shots.

I'd say 6+1 is a good medium for us (35 rounds with a "possible" 210 rounds) but I dunno... I think it all depends on what you intend to do with your said gear/course of fire.

For CQB matches I only ever need 5 rifle mags total and 2 pistol mags total. I run the Shellback Banshee PC. I've tried vests, i've tried chest rigs like the TT MAV, but i've come to love plate carriers more than anything for the simple fact that it conforms to my body a lot better than a chest rig ever did for me. It doesn't twist around my body or ride up like a chest rig did. This is what works for me personally, i'm sure other people feel more comfortable with a chest rig, but I like my PC.

I run it light with 3 mags across my chest. If I ever felt like running more on my PC, I would replace the current pouches with double decker tacos to increase my mag carriage by 3 mags. I don't like using bungee retained mag pouches because the bungee's get in the way and I hate having excess #### hangin' around my "workspace". I purchased a PC because I have the option to run plates later on when I can A) afford them and B) feel the need to run them and not have to don extra kit. Just keepin' it simple. On hot days i'm considering taking the cummerbund off completely and running my PC with just an elastic cummerbund.

On my belt rig, I carry 3 rifle mags, 4 pistol mags, my pistol, my multi tool, a flashlight, my blowout kit and my grenade pouch holds a surefire battery container for extra batteries. I usally keep a couple extra batteries for my Vortex on my rifle in the pistol grip and in the foregrip.

For my matches, I load my pistol with the furthest mag on my left side and I load my rifle with the furthest right mag on my PC. As i'm reloading, the mag changes get easier as I am not reaching across my body. The 4 FDE mags are loaded with 5 rounds and the black PMAG is loaded with 4 rounds. The different colors help me indicate that I am infact grabbing the right magazine. The magazine on my belt that is right behind my pistol is just a reaction/extra mag in case I fumble during a reload or a mag fails. This kit setup is strictly for competition only. Depending on the course of fire, my load out will change. This is what works for me. Since I started shooting, i've also gone through 3 different types of holsters. Started off with those cheezy nylon "one size fits all" pieces of junk. Then moved onto a SERPA, decent holster but when it jammed up on me one day, I got rid of it and moved onto a Safariland. I didn't like the Safariland because no matter how much I used it at home or on the range, I could never get used to the hood and the ALS system. I wanted something simple that has retention like the SERPA, but would also bare a flashlight like my Safariland did, so I just got one made for me. Now, my pistol doesn't come out of it's holster unless I want it out, I can run a flashlight if I want and I don't have to strap it to my leg....i've always hated drop leg rigs.

In the CF, it's a whole different story unfortunately. I hate the new TacVest and will never like it. I prefer the old webbing. If I was still allowed to wear it, I would turn that POS Tacvest back into Supply and use my webbing.

Decided I'd take advantage of the special on CTOMS website and grab a battle belt and suspenders, which I've been interested in trying out for a while. I will eventually ditch the duty belt for something with a cobra buckle. I really need to figure out which type of pistol pouch I want to use. It's either BFG tenspeed, ITW pistol fast mag or HSGI taco.

On there right now are 2 ATS short single mag pouches, a BFG booboo kit pouch and a safariland 6377-83 on a drop off mount. Love that holster, super slick draw/holstering at pretty much the perfect height. I did have a thigh mounted one but it made the belt ride down, messed with my pant leg and just didn't feel right. At the moment I do not feel the need to use the suspenders as the load seems to sit well but I have them in case. I might add a first aid kit further down the road.

Here's my PPE for work. I love it. Because the company purchased ceramic lvl4 standalones, this is the lightest I carrier I can get. And because I only wear it when mounted in convoy or enroute to a destination it's fine for utility and wearability. I don't forsee this being all too comfy if I was using it back in the CF.

I don't hang stuff off it. I use my cargo pants and a bat belt for that.
