Good day all

I'm a big fan of short takedown big bores
I've had a few nice ones over the years, and regretfully sold or traded for some other firearm

Now I'm looking again, but can't seem to find .44 mags or 45/70 very easily..let alone used.

Are Henry and Chiappa still pushing these out ?
My last 3 were 44 mag Kodiak, 44 mag Henry mares leg and a 45/70 ridge runner

Thanks for your thoughts and insights

Still occasionally see some Taylors & Co take down 1892's, Alaskan's I believe they call them, appear on store shelves. The Taylor's seem to be made to a little higher standard than other off the shelf Italian levers. Very nice.

The henry mare's leg are a bit harder to find, but shipments are coming in more regularly now, and you can still find them out there. I keep looking at them and adding a regular stock, but I am just not sold on all the "brass" on them.

The chiappa's are out there as well. I know of a place that has a few 45/70 in stock in a few different configs, and it seems like they have a 44 mag as well. I'll pm you info.

Well,......

I finally made the plunge and bought a new henry 44 mag mares leg. Was on the fence for a while and passed up on a few of them while contemplating the purchase. Finally found one retail, so jumped on it this time around. Even scored with a full stock that I was able to find in Canada as well. Both being shipped in, so will be a few days before I see them. For me the short stock is kinda impractical, but the thought of a 12" barrel is intriguing, so the combination full stock should be interesting.

I looked at the chiappa TD version as well in the 12" barrel, but they are even harder to find. Looked last week at the chiappa black non TD, 12" version, but the barrel was thinner than pencil thin, and just didn't look proper, almost like it would come apart. Not for this guy.

I'll wait and see how I like it with the full stock, and then see if the brass grows on me, or look at the possibility of cerekote on it to cover the shinny brass.

I have a Henry mares leg in .22lr, and I was able to get a youth stock for it. Its the most fun little tack driver I have. And its the best rifle to introduce young shooters to. I often consider getting one in .357mag and doing the same with it.
