I was in the same spot as you recently. I absolutely love the M1 Carbine, but I couldn't find a surplus one in good condition and I wasn't confident about the .30 Carbine round having any real purpose. I'm not going to use it in rifle matches because the ballistics are iffy, I'd need to get more reloading equipment, and ammo isn't very common. So I decided a .22 version would satisfy me, especially since I could load more than 5 rounds for some blasting at the range.
I looked at the Chiappa carbine and it's very pretty, but has function issues. Check reports online. Handling it, like crosman said it does feel a bit cheap and has a LOT of plastic on it. Overall, I ended up just buying parts for a 10/22 M1 Carbine conversion. I know it won't disappoint me, the conversions look sick, and it's spare parts for my other 10/22 if something ever goes wrong.
