Does anyone else besides me carry some "chicken loads" for their centerfire rifle while big game hunting? A light bullet with a light charge of powder for stopping bunny charges or grouse attacks? :)

I have a couple "chicken loads". I use a 267 gr hollow base cast bullet in the 45-70 loaded to just over 1000 fps. And a flat base 90 gr. .310" cast bullet in 30-06 and 300 winny also loaded to about 1000 fps.

Anyone else doing this?

dam, thought you where making bullets from chicken meat...

Get Jihawg on the line.

I've really wanted to experiment with some loads like that for .308, I've heard some interesting ones that are quite well suited for rabbits. But, being how I'd don't really have a chance to get out to where it's legal to shoot at them, I haven't gotten a chance to test any.

I've been thinking of trying some for my 270, just haven't gotten around to it yet.

Actually, I might load up some for my 7mag. I'm heading to the range Thursday. If the poi isn't too far off from my mainloads I might carry a few this year.

Ahhh, the fun of hand loading!

John Wooters had a hockshop load with 3 X.458 balls with a card wad under and over the load with a roll crimp.Claimed about 2.5 group at 20 yards..........Harold

71 gr fmj... ?gr clays .308

I decided maybe not to post the load as it works for me but don't wanna be responsible for someone doing something dumb

And here I was thinking that I have never had a bullet turn chicken on me and avoid the intended target!!

I like either hard cast or a solid launched at very slow velocities. No need to huge wound channels or supreme penetration.

A nice guy at the range offered to let me touch off a 45-70 through his H&R on the weekend. I put down my SKS and gave it a go. This was as fun as fun gets

So naturally, I went searching and saw on wikipedia that the army provided some sort of buckshot or frangible round for soldiers to supplement their rations?

I know nothing about this but I am searching for an excuse to bring one of these home and the missus will not go for 'supplement my rations' so if anyone has a rationale that might work I'm all ears...

When I was really big into Enfield collecting and my Father-in-law was still raising chickens I had a favorite chicken load that blew all the feathers off the chicken and didn't damage any meat. All you needed to do was attach the grenade launcher to your favorite No.1 Enfield, and shove the chicken in. Then just fire a .303 blank loaded with cordite to burn off all the pin feathers.

I thought all Canadians knew how to chuck a chicken and play dirty hockey, you can load three hockey pucks in the launcher and take out half the opposing team.

That's awesome. One time we had a party and didn't know who was going to show up. We had a colonel Sanders rubber chicken shrine in front of the fireplace. It scared most of the undesirables away!

There some kind of game getter load, kinda like the snap caps with a lead ball. Have one for my 7mag somewhere but never used it. Not sure if they still make them.

222 Rem with a 22 cal pellet and just a primer seems to work very well on grouse at close range! Doesn't get much cheaper than that! With a hand primer, a flat of primers, can of pellets, and a few sized cases you can hunt small game all day! Or week depending on your luck/limit/aim lol.

In Ardrosson, Ab there is a guy Named Hammond who makes the "Game Getter" . He machines off the primer side of the bullet case and installs a stainless steel insert that holds a rimfire industrial cap. Swage a OO buckshot into the end and you have a chicken round for your 30.06, or .308, or whatever.

I seen him at a gunshow or sportsman show a year ago, so I think he still makes them. They work well, same velocity as a .22

Only problem with this is the transition period between small game and large game season, you can't have a centre fire rifle.
