I've been looking into the 7.62 re-works now in circulation. It seems that these were re-barreled to 7.62 in 1961. Apparently the short barreled variants feature 2 groove rifling, while the long barreled models have 4 grooves.

Does anyone own one of these to confirm this? Also, how does the bore and general condition appear?

They are Steyr built Mausers. They come in two lengths. They also come in two different cartridges. 7.62x51Nato and 7x57Mauser.

They are worn on the exterior and are mismatched. They headspace OK and internally, are almost excellent. I have a long version of both. Also picked up one of the VG rated ones from P&S. They are very accurate and functional. They also, have the Steyr built, M95 Mausers in 7.62Nato. The M95s in 7x57, are all sold out.

The 7.62Nato marked rifle, has a .3085 bore. Not worn, that is the nominal diameter. They are the exact same lenth as the 7x57 rifles, so the barrels, would have been purpose built. The receivers on the 7x57 rifles are finished in the white, the 7.62 rifles, are blued and crudely stamped 7.62 Nato on the bridge. The bores in both are excellent. There aren't any cleaning rods, unless you put out the extra for the VG rated rifles. It would also be prudent, to buy a bayonet for the rifle at the same time. These have a habit, of becoming hard to find, later.

You may want to consider a 7x57. The cartridge is original to the rifle and has pretty much the same power, down range as the 7.62 Nato. Both cartridges are not easily or cheaply found on the surplus circuit any more so either or as far as ammunition goes. Both are easily reloadable and both have a huge selection of bullets to choose from.

I also think, this will be the last of them. They all have very nice Chilean crests, on the receiver ring. Whatever, don't expect the rifle to look new. They are exactly as the description portrays. They've been well used but not abused and IMHO, a good value.

By the way, Tradex, a banner sponsor, carries a nice selection of rifles and S&B ammunition.

Thanks. How about the rifling in the 7.62 bbls- 2 or 4 groove?

I buy the long rifles, because of aging eyes and it has a 4 groove barrel. I don't know about the 1895.

If you are willing to spend another Hundred dollars and want the cleaning rod, VG condition rifle in 7x57, I highly reccomend P&S

I checked one at the shop today and the 1912-61 rifles are two groove barrel.

found this one last spring in like new condition.
they show up from time to time and are quite affordable.

That was a very decent find polaris. Have you kissed your rabbit's foot lately? You got lucky, admit it. There were very few of those Exc condition, all matching rifle/bayonet sets that made it into Canada. Not like the Brazilian 1908s and 1935s. Even those are scarce.

I suggest, that if you want one of these rifles, get it now. With all of the new UN bans on export, of 7.62 Nato marked firearms, there won't be anymore after this.

By the way Jean, my 29 inch barreled 1912, in 7.62 Nato, has a four groove barrel. Very well done and looks to be of decent quality. I wish they had been a little more careful, with the Stamp. Just a tad sloppy. But, I can live with it.
The VG rifle I picked up from you, in 7x57, is very nice and even though the bolt is mismatched, it is an excellent shooter. Groups, average around an inch at 100yds, with 140 grain boat tails, loaded to 2900fps. From what I gather, similar velocities to what the Chileans loaded them to.

I have a beautiful Model 1912 polished receiver and a tiger stripe stock with the Mauser banner pressed into the stock. I have one of the 7.62 Mod 1912 short rifles marked
MODELO 1912-61
NATO
Nice neat job and its a two groove barrel.
Polaris nice 1935 Brazilian Mauser.
