Chinese state-owned media have released footage showing the test of the next generation of an assault rifle, called the QBZ-191. The ‘QBZ’ acronym stands for ‘Qīngwǔqì Bùqiāng Zìdòng’, literally meaning ‘light weapon, rifle, automatic’. The digits usually denote the final year of a weapon’s development. The video, released by the state-owned broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV), included footage showing the basic and advanced version of QBZ-95 during its tests at the No. 208 Research Institute of China Ordnance Industries. Three versions of the next generation assault rifle are supposed to appear – with 267 mm (PDW) trunks, 368 (the main sample) and an elongated heavy barrel for snipers in the squads. The rifle developed to replace theQBZ-95bullpup-style rifle that was introduced in 1997. According to sources, the new rifle is chambered in the standard 5.8x42mm caliber using a new type of rounds that have better performance on medium to long-range. It has an effective firing range of 300 m for the carbine version and 400 m for the assault rifle version with a rate of fire of 750 rpm (Rounds Per Minute).

Wonder why France and now China are moving away from bullpup rifles.

Because the obsession and academic justification of long barreld 556 are finally dead and buried. All anyone needs from a 5.56 is 11.5" barrel and if you don't feel too radical and don't want to upset the terminal ballistic fanatics who are still basing their belief on the Frackler chart then it is the 14.5 - People can't hit anything outside of the flat KD range beyond 200m anyways there is no reason to stick a 20" barrel on any general infantry weapon system. This means the entire argument for bullpup is completely nullified. And for academic purpose 11.5" can easily reach things out to 450m, more than enough for 99% infantry application.

If anyone needs to reach the 600m range gate, they got the DMR with vari power scopes, and LRF. That's pretty much what the French did - HK416 11" and 14.5" and SCAR H for DMR. The Italian also did the same with ARX160.

Other militaries had been somewhat there already - US army sticks with the M4 carbine and M110A1 SDM, while others are stuck with their 1m sticks from the 90's until the next major replacement. New 5.56 ammo also took care of the old argument about terminal ballistics out of SBR.
