Hi all,
Need your advice-
I got 3 Chinese military SKS from frontier last week
Researched online how to remove the cosmoline and spent
all weekend experimenting and cleaning - a painful process.
I got a 306, 316 and a no number version.
* Boiling water for 10 min
* Used Simple Green - leave it for 5-10 min
* Brush away cosmo
* Rise with warm water
* Apply ballistol coating
(Stocks handled separately on a different day)
While doing the cleaning process, right before the ballistol treatment,
I noticed that on my 316, rust was forming on the barrel. (within 10 min)
(exterior - connection side with receiver)
I panicked and used probably 5x+ more ballistol to oil the whole piece
and wiped it off repeatedly. I was not sure if it was cosmo or rust as it was both in dark brownish color... but kept going.
I used the same cleaning treatment for the 3 SKS siblings, but
only the 316 gave me the rust issue on the barrel.
The other SKS brothers were all fine.
The next day, I saw a brownish film on the 316, so I wiped the whole
thing with paper towel, confirmed the brown rust or cosmo, and
reapplied a thick layer of ballistol. It seem to be ok for a few days.
Yesterday, I opened the gun vault and to my shock,
noticed that the 316 developed a brownish color film near the barrel again
Cleaned the film away and applied oil again...
Not sure why the rust is creeping back after a few days..
Is scrubbing with steel wool mandatory in this case? (I did not do...)
Again, the other two SKSes are in perfect condition.
Is my 316 going to die from rust and goto gun heaven? :-(
Help appreciated-
