Alot of words of widsom here. My opinion: buy a quality Russian SKS and put a nice butt extension on it. There are many to choose from, and it will help the LOP problem for taller shooters. I would not recommend any scope option for the SKS. Shoot it as is, and keep it as your sub-100 metre rifle. There are a number of quality commercial 7.62x39 "Soviet" ammo sources suitable for deer hunting. I prefer the 123 grain SP Prvi Partizan. Not only is it very accurate and effective, but the brass is reloadable. Ballistics are similar to 30-30.
There's alot of debate about chrome vs. non-chrome lined bores. Personally, the non-chrome bores are a bit more accurate in my experience. Like EVERY rifle, clean the damn barrel before putting it away. I have never seen a spec of rust on any of my non-chrome barreled SKS's... even shooting surplus.
The SKS is a simple and effective design, and is a HIGH quality rifle. Don't let price fool you into thinking it's not. Yes, in 99.9 % of cases, if you buy peanuts, you get peanuts... the SKS is the rare 0.1% Looks are subjective, but my mint Russians look F'n great to me. I handle them far more than I handle my $2500+ modern rifles.
