Chinese or Russian

A Chinese SKS costs as much as an original Russian SKS, so why would you buy one?

Marstar's are not Norinco. They are the original 1960's Chinese military, not a cheap knock off. They are essentially brand new, never fired, and I think they would make excellent shooters.

Really it comes down to that you can't go wrong with whatever you get, although I would avoid the Norincos, they are cheap. Get a Russian for the historical factor, or a Chinese military cause they are a brand new rifle. Whichever will do you well. If you want something to collect, you will have to look harder to find a nice unrestored one like the Westrifle link, but most people would have that as a safe queen, and buy something else as a shooter.

Russian. Need I say more?...

I bought a Rusky...but I know sfa about it really.

I sold my Yugo and bought a Rusky for that reason...

I wanted one for blasting...not for lookin at...and there are folks that would like a Yugo as a collectable...I'm not one of them unfortunately...

I'll second the warning ....... Chinese military is not the same as Norinco. I started out with a Norinco and it was nothing but problems. I now have a '51 Tula and it hasn't skipped a beat in over 3 cases of ammo. No FTF or FTE!!! As for Russian vrs Chinese, I don't have any experience with the Chinese military (heard good things about them) but again, why buy a copy when you can get the original for the same $ ??? Seems like a no brainer ...... Russian all the way! Just my $.02 worth YMMV :D

If you get Chinese, the two factories on the market now are 625 and 306. Get the 306 - they are probably older production (still new and unissued) and on average are better made than the Factory 625 guns.

I've owned both and have seen many of each. The 306 is superior.

That being said, if you can hand-pick, get one of the recent import Russian laminates hand-selected for nice finish, no receiver to stock slop, matching laminate handguard and chrome lined bore. The Russian laminate stocks are better looking and more durable than the Chinese stocks. Mechanically they should be each other's equals.

aren't they nice, the Russian laminated SKS's I mean...

I got a 1952 Tula and a 1954 Ishy. Once you clean that gummy shellac you'll see they are real beauties.

There is no comparison between Chinese and Russians.
The Russians are soooooooo much nicer, and as a bonus you'll get the original not just a cheap copy!

I have both. Although the finish is not as good as the Russian, the Chinese one has a way better trigger.

exeptions confirm the rule...

I had several chinese SKS and they are all (sorry) Crap!!!

It takes a tremendous Fool to buy a bad Chinese SKS copy , if you can have the real thing for the same money.

Please don`t get me wrong, but that`s my experience over the last 35 years of collecting and shooting.

My opinion? Buy a Russian one if your going to leave it stock and buy a Chinese one if your going to trick it out. Ive never seen or fired a Chinese one myself but I have a Russian one. Ive only fired a few hundred rounds through it and had zero failures. Me and my buddy plan on getting chinese ones and tricking them out with ATI stock and red dots. But im leaving the Russian one as a collectable shooter.

I think that's really not most people's experience. There is a HUGE difference between a proper Chinese military SKS and one assembled from the crappiest parts for Norinco commercial sale. The military issue SKS carbines are really quite nice - every bit as good as the Russian SKS's in my rack. This from the experience of owning many of both types.

So, how about the stamped parts (trigger gard)?
the overall finish?
and especially the wood on the stock?
Can you in all honesty say, that the Chinese are equal to the Russian SKS ?

I wholeheartedly agree w Dr.K.....mess around with the chicom.....love the Russian and leave it intact, your children's' children will thank you for it!:D
As for the Chinese rifle being crap, well I can't say I agree on that point. My chicom shoots straight {@ 50 and 100m anyway} and I don't have an issue putting crates of ammo thru it..... Resale value is nil, the stock {IMHO} looks like barf...so I'll shoot the piss out of it and not cry about a banged up stock and 10yrs from now spend $200 and buy another chicom to abuse.
In the mean time I'll also be collecting pretty Russians of rarity and give them range, but not bush time.
