Chinese SKS Dating Thread

Not my system. A few guys over at sks-files.com uncovered it.

I think the system applies to the Type54s and the early AK56's. I'm strictly an SKS guy, though.

# 310829xx?
Is that the right serial number?

Can you post a photo of the serial # and gun.

Thanks for quick reply. Do you have any info about factory 946? Rare, common etc? I bought mine cheap a couple years ago, but seen someone selling one recently on the EE for 600. I'm guessing he was out to lunch, but wouldn't hurt to ask.

Regarding the T54, my guess would be 31st year, 1984. But it's just a guess-- as I have no idea if they were still being manufactured in 1984.

Cool looking piece, though.

Someone would be able to tell you over at sks-files.com.

946: Uncommon but not rare. There are over 100 known arsenals for the type56-- possibly closer to 200. Many of them were very low output facilities-- which makes such carbines uncommon to find, but plentiful in that they are Chinese.

The known dates of manufacture for /946\ type56's are 13th-16th years of production (1968-1973)

I live in the states. $600 USD is a ridiculous price in the states, and I would assume even more so in Canada. But I would have to defer to your Canadian brethren to tell you just how ridiculous.

Thank you so much! My keyboard trashed so I couldn’t post anything more in the picture LOL. Grateful for your expertise!

T5 6492

All the numbers on the outside match, including the magazine (other than laminate stock). Bore is excellent if not new. Blueing is mostly good, small discoloured spot on the rear.

That's not a Chinese rifle.

It's Soviet. The first two characters are "TБ" from the Russian Cyrillic alphabet, and the last character "Д" which indicates a 1956 year of manufacture.

Hi there, I have two questions:

1) I bought a Chinese SKS with arsenal stamp “?5” from the link you’ve provided (I’ve seen it called /0306\ on other pages). Which arsenal is this, based on your research?

2) The serial number is stamped like this: 6 -1611### then the arsenal stamp. No Chinese lettering. What is the date on this one, and anything else of interest based on this information?

Thanks!
