Hello

I am new to CGN, and I am happy to find a place where I can relate to.

I have a question about my rifle. I don't know if I am doing something wrong or not doing something right, but I cannot remove the Fixed Magazine.

I tried different ways of dissassembling the SKS, but I still can't remove the fixed magazine. I think it's because of our 5-round semi-auto laws. Maybe the importers put a mechanism in the magazine so it cannot be modified to the 10-round magazine like it was intended to? (Not that I am aiming for this).

Or maybe I just suck at removing a fixed magazine from an SKS, but after I jammed my finger, I decided to look for answers.

After hours of searching for an answer, I found this place.
I hope you can help, I think probably most of you own an SKS variant. ;)

Thanks in advance.

The fixed mag version doesn't come out, at least not until disassembly, IIRC. Mine I believe hinges once the trigger assembly drops out (been awhile since I had that gun apart.) The magazine is loaded through the breech, straight down in, or off stripper clips. I believe the D variant mag comes out, but someone with one can correct me...

sks mag

yes turn gun upside down, just behind trigger guard you will se atab sticking up it has to be pushed down to allow the trigger to pop upwards lift trigger out ,and mag will lift out , observe carfully how it was assembled so you can put it back together,,,

To remove the mag, you have to disassemble the gun. Remove the trigger mechanism (By pushing in on the little button behind the trigger guard with something sturdy like a punch). Once the trigger mechanism is out of the way, pull straight down on the mag. It may be stuck, so vigourous pulling may be needed:) . Once it comes free, it swings down and then will pull right out of the gun.

Thanks for your post.

I know the SKS fixed magazine is suppose to stay in, until dissassembly.
That is where my problem is. I can take all the parts out, except the magazine.
I actually have two SKS's. One is brand-new (not-used) while the other is used and looks like it was left in the mud and looted off a dead corpse.

I bought these rifles because I love AK-47's and their variants. They use the same catridge as an AK-47 and they look like an AK-47. They are the closest thing I can get to an AK here in Canada.

The answer I am looking for is do any of you own a recently bought SKS and have a problem removing the fixed magazine for maintenance?

Again, I may be doing something wrong, but I spent hours on end trying to figure out how to remove it without damaging the rifle.

i got two sks, one had no problem removing the mag but the other one , it was a bugger, i was wrestling with it for 10 min then i figured out if i couldnt pull the mag down then i will push it down from the top, i used a long skinny bar , thru the ammo feeding area, i placed the bar on top, towards the rear of the mag , avoid the the sides lips that hold the ammo, i tapped it gently, it it started to move down. after several taps, WAAALAAA, down it went.

now , putting it back, it was not as difficult but still requires slamming my palm on the bottom of mag to get it in.

thanks goodness , these mag are not removable, cos i cant see me doing this everytime i reload.

sks sticky map housing

Yeah, when I first got my sks, it was very difficult to remove the mag housing, almost tore my fingers off, then used screwdriver/hammer and tapped from the top through the receiver onto the mag housing lip and finally got it out. If you don't want scratches, used a cloth to buffer the tapping. After about 20x, I can now remove with my fingers (but its still not easy). Of exponentially more difficulty, is putting the trigger group (safety on) back in behind the magazine during assembly. You wouldn't believe how difficult it is, so I won't bother telling you. Some of the chinese sks apparently do not come with high precision machine fitting... What can you expect for $150. I guess.

yup!!! i got 15x more to go before i can pull it down with my fingers, haha.

thats the beauty of $150 rifle, i dont have to baby it. i plan to shoot the hell out of it, thats why i got two, haha.

Step 1; rack the cocking handle, so that the bolt sticks in the open position
Step 2; hit the magazine catch to drop the mag floorplate
Step 3; pop out the trigger group (safety on, thanx Calum!)
Step 4; pull the magazine well out of the rifle

It may be easier to pop the magazine assembly out if you remove the action from the stock. You won't be able to pull the magazine out with the bolt closed, since the feed lips wrap around the bolt. You definetely have to remove the trigger group to get the mag out. Hope that helps!

Personaly I think AK's are a bit over rated and SKS are under rated.
You can't own an AK in canada but you can in the US, You can own a norinco 305 in canada but not in the US,advantage canada.

Oh one more thing...on most SKS the magazine will not be removable until after the trigger group is out, and once again the safety has to be on to get the trigger group out. :)

I take it you haven't heard of the CZ-858? It fires the same ammo, looks quite simaller to an AK(more so than an SKS), and is non restricted.

i had the same problem with a recently bot sks. when i fitted all the parts together without the wood, i can clearly see that the top rear of the mag was rubbing against the receiver so i solved the problem by hand filing the top front piece of the mag that engage with the barrel.

do it slow, little at a time till it slide in easy.
