I would check over the op rod, spring, and extractor as well. That is a real good starting spot, as is the gas tube for fitment and blockage.
That being said, I am one of those guys that likes buying something to tinker on and spen lots of range time with. I took a rough cycling AP74 and made it better than my 10/22 and more fun to shoot.I have also done this with a few squires. It does get frustrating but when you finally get it figured out and everything starts running like clock work it is an excellent feeling of accomplishment.
