So I found a Chinese SKS today for $125. It looked ok, but it clearly had been shot, and had a few dings and scratches on the stock. For $125, I thought I can't go wrong so I bought it. I got home and set it aside as Mrs Cariboo was waiting for me to take her to dinner. When we got home from dinner, I started the stripdown. Bolt and firing pin very dirty, grease! and black soot, no rust though. The firing pin was seized in the bolt (Slamfire anyone???). Pulled the trigger group and mag, more black sooty grease. Then I pulled the gas tube off, totally plugged with cosmoline. The dumb **** before did not clean it before he shot it!!!! Removed the stock, more cosmoline. I have a bunch of Russian SKS's already and none of them were so full of cosmoline as this previously fired Chinese example. So I got it all cleaned up and have the stock leaning up against the wall beside my woodstove. It looks like it should be an ok shooter, I will try to get a few rounds down the pipe tomorrow.
How would a SKS shoot when it is so gunked up with cosmoline?? Did I get a deal because the previous owner didn't know what he was doing when it came to cleaning it??
Sorry no pics at this time.

I've seen many Chinese SKSes fired with grease sill caked on.

"Durp! Look at this here rifle, Jim. Only $75. Let's shoot it. Should be good to go because my Browing X-Bolt was safe to shoot after I bought it."

The extra cosmoline kept the parts from rusting when the previous owner was to lazy to clean it.

I remember my first several Chinese SKSs (all there was then before the Ruskies) and they were covered in cosmoline....downright oily. You really had to tear them down and get in there and everywhere ,hell even that soft porous chicom wood would sweat the stuff out for days.

But hey ,great guns once cleaned ,at least for what they are and inexpensive back then.

So it shoots OK. I had a couple FTF, light primer strikes. The trigger group was still gunked up somewhat, I cleaned it up hopefully that will cure it. Also had the bolt jam up on me, the pinning of the mag had the follower hold the shells in the mag at a weird angle not putting upward pressure on the front of the bolt, causing it to jam.
