Recently acquired this Chinese sks. All matching, including the magazine. Doesn’t appear to have ever been fired. The action and bolt were packed full of cosmo or some Chinese variant, some thick sticky brown grease. I thought it was interesting it came with a nearly flush half magazine that can only hold 5 rounds. Actually makes it nice to carry. Any info on this model with the half magazine? It doesn’t seem very common, Atleast not nearly as common as the full 5/10 round fixed magazines. Appears to be made in 1977 Arsenal stamp /6601\. Any collector value above a standard Chinese sks? Thanks

The mag has been cut down by a previous owner at some point I would expect, there’s a thread or two floating around somewhere from a few years back about how to cut them down. The factory mags were all 10rd mags as far as I know.

I have seen an aftermarket 5-round magazine with the same comfortable flush fit. It was carried as a hunting rifle.

20 round mags could be had as well I believe. I never heard of a 5 round mag and most likely cut down as you mentioned if the mag is matching #.

The American importers had factory Chinese SKS Rifles made with five round magazines as an option
They also sold five round factory kits
I have two rifles made with five round flush magazines
They also sold twenty round factory kits

Yup there were 20 rounders, I only ever saw one and I’m kicking myself for not buying it!
It was a neat mag it had a star stamped on the side of it :)

Linked to some pictures of the magazine. If it was cut down from a ten rounder it was a good job in my opinion. Either way I may make it my 100 yard or less bush rifle for deer.

Wow!!! I thought I was the only one with 5 rd mag. Mine is like yours. Arsenal stamp 6601, s/n 220######. The only difference is that the stock has reddish- brown colour. The SKS was bought locally, so I don't know the origin. Everything is matching except the gas tube and piston.

James1873 - On your last picture, it shows a block welded on your magazine arm. Does this reduce the number of shells that you can put in? On mine without anything welded on, I could only put in 5. If this block reduces the magazine capacity to less than 5, then more than likely it was a 10 round originally and blocked to limit to 5. And when magazine was altered they did not remove block. Something to check out.

I’m not actually sure, I haven’t fired it yet. Ammo order is in the mail. I just assumed it was 5. I noticed your magazine also appears more flush then mine, so maybe that’s why they added a tab?

Sounds like when you cut the mag so it’s flush with the stock it will hold 6 rounds, so a bit of the block or pin on the follower needs to be left in place. There’s mention of it in this thread, as well as pics of the cutting process.
