I was installing a drill & tap side scope mount to my Chinese factory 36 SKS and noticed that the steel was substantially harder on the Chinese model over the Russian Tula model.

It was a total pain in the ass - broke 1 drill bit, and 3 taps getting it done.

Anyone else make the same observation?

I wonder if the quality of steel used in the barrels is similarly different between the Chinese and Russian variants.

The Norc 1911's are the same. Much harder than Colts.
You can't use HSS, only carbides will last.
Lucky for them they make the carbides too, so can get them cheaper.

I believe a Norc will outlast a Colt. Properly cared for, that is.
If it was made without too many serious flaws.

i drilled and taped a later model of chinese SKS and broke nothing , actually it went pretty smooth .

Noticed the same thing. Also found that the two rear holes in the Chinese receiver for the Choate mount were much more difficult to tap than the front two holes.

What factory, and where/when did you buy?

it belong to another member , there was no factory number so i reckon its a commercial production .
