Choate Scope mount?

HAHA! Awesome. I'm also interested in the Weaver Converta Mount.


Also, if I wanted to cut my barrel down a couple inches, where might I find a good flash suppressor so it doesn't look like such a hack job?

Difficult proposition, the end of the SKS barrel is turned down and the FSB/Bayo lug are pressed on to the smaller O.D. stub. This stops the FSB/Bayo lug from sliding back during use. The 18.5" mark leaves a bit of that smaller O.D. end there. Unless you shorten the FSB and press it back on with enough sticking out to use an SKS specific muzzle device, it will look funny.

arghhh.I figured it would be in exactly the wrong spot. I didn't measure. That sucks! haha.

How do the convert-a-mounts compare to the choate? I gather you don't need to remove the choate for cleaning etc either right? Is there an advantage to the convert-a-mount setup?

browse through the SKS optics sticky, BJS did a write up on his. The converta mount has a bracket that bolts to the reciever, and a rail that bolts to the bracket and slings your optics over bore centerline. The advantage is you can buy extra rails seperate and swap out optics with a couple bolts. pretty slick setup, and it holds zero
 
Any known dealers that carry the 870 convertamount that are in canada?
Also does the kit come with the side rail normally?

As bjs7293 stated before, use the Remington 870/1100
see under kit (Weaver part # 48881). It includes the base
(#48302) and bracket (#48310). I mounted the base flush
with the top of the receiver and flush with the rear of the
receiver and use a compact scope (8.5" long) to retain the
ability to use the stripper clips. esque

I'm still wondering who sells those parts in Canada or you ordering off of weaver direct?

Also how did you find the hardness of the metal when drilling. I have a norinco SKS and i'm reading on Sksboards that the hardness of the chinese sks' can be a bit of an issue.

You will be able to order these mounts from your local dealer, if he sells Weaver products. Keep an eye on Ebay, that is where I pickup the ones I used. I used 8-32 hardware to mount mine, so get yourself a quality 9/64 drill bit, not the drill bits from the dollar store. The use of a drill press is recommended but I have done it before with a powered hand drill. Take your time drilling at a medium speed with a lubricant of your choice. Remember measure twice drill once.
 
cobalt and titanium coated bits are much harder than HSS. I killed a couple HSS bits in my SKS-D before switching to a #29 high molybednium bit that worked like a charm. #29 and 9/64 will work for 8-32, the 9/64 is 5 thou larger o.d., not enough to matter. I ran it in at 610 rpm in my press with lots of cutting oil. for weaver converta mount, any weaver dealer should be able to get them for you, if not try ebay. theres usually a bunch of converta mount stuff on there
 
sweet guys thanks for the info. I will be trying this at some point in the near future. The receiver cover scope mount I bought shook loose after like 40 rounds- I was never able to sight it in as it kept shifting. Needless to say i've been researching alternatives since that trip to the range.
 
Buy the Choate and be done with it. Mine is drilled and tapped, as any garage mechanic can do properly, and doesn't miss a beat. My only problems were to relieve the receiver opening and drill the gas tube so the brass doesn't smack said receiver and fly off into the woodlot on each round fired. All good. The new synthetic stock is very nice too.
