Choice of optics for M14/M305 and its harsh recoil

Mine has a HiLux M1000 2-10x ART scope on a McCann Industries mount.

Notice the M14 bipod I got on EBay, mounted on a small rail under the stock.

they let you shoot that at a indoor range??

I live in Montreal, QC, and the CTM range lets you fire calibers up to 458 Winchester Magnum.

Building an M305 will cost you a fortune that you will not get out if you decide to sell sometime down the road.
What harsh recoil is that? There's very little felt recoil. Whoever told you "it hits in two different directions" is very confused.
A 6.5-20X50 scope is far too much magnification and weight. 2.5x to 8x or a 3x to 9x is plenty. Mind you, you will get bored really fast at 50 yards and the muzzle blast will hurt.

I'm...kinda expecting to spend actually. For starters, I will almost surely put it in a Sage EBR stock, and change the op rod spring guide for a Sadlak one, and the spring itself too. Would be spending anywhere from 1600-2000$ (rifle cost included). I'm also not excluding taking a look at the EE and buying a used Sage build as well. I quickly realized that 6.5-20X50 was WAY too much, don't worry! Bored fast at 50 yards? Maybe I will...eventually. Buy I'm a new shooter, got experience to build up...! I will also be planning getting out of the city a few times a year and going to an outdoor range. Muzzle blast will hurt...?? Don't know what you mean exactly? As for the recoil: what 45ACPKING mentions in the quote just below...!

nobody is confused...... well...... not everbody :D
the m14 is known for it's double stroke of the action being hard on poorly mounted or poorly fabricated optics. whether this is correctly identified as recoil or not who cares.

Well m14 build.... expensive and not it depends how deep you want to go, I got a stock one that I will built down the road but nothing crazy.

Here what I will put on it:
-M14.ca casm gen 2 alu.
-m14.ca blackarrow spring guide.
-probably a burris e1 2-7x35 or 3-9x40
-a cheak rest

That doesn't break the bank and you shoul be under 1000$ and if your lucky under 2 moa. The m14 is only going up in price and the scope and accessories should still fetch about 75% of msrp on the ee so in a couple of years with the rising price of the m14 you should not loose money if you keep it simple like the mods I was saying.

Again, looking over 1000$ here. Doesn't really bother me. BTW I ended up buying a Vortex Strikefire II red dot because I had a good deal! I will also eventually be buying the burris e1 2-7X35 or some other 3-9X40 scope.

What would be good inexpensive to moderately expensive optic if one decided to use a shorty norc prone on varmints? (yotes, wolves) Thx.

I got a Burris e1 3-9x40 and a 2-7x35 and I love both. 200-250$ one is on my rfb the other on my m14

Not to sound like an *ss, but is this real world experience on yotes and wolves? I'm trying to finish my shorty norc build and am reassessing what I'll use it for.

Since most of my long range hunting is with a bolt and close up and personal deer with levers, I've kinda lost my 'raison d'être' for building my deer hunting norc shorty.

So I want to reconfigure for varmints but have no experience varmint shooting. Is this enough scope? Do I need a variable? I was thinking a fixed scope but again have no experience in varmint shooting. Thx.

I had a Sightmark 4-16x on mine for a while, thing work's flawlessly. Holds zero no problem, easy adjust turrets (they lock too), not too big or heavy, and it sits just right for me. I'm actually trying to sell it for a project I'm working on. Here was the setup:

Edit: If the recoil of an M1 is too much for you, you have 2 options. 1: Learn recoil management. 2: Use a smaller cal.

Not being a a $$, its a legitimate question, well I don't have experience o such animal no as our wonderful n-b hunting regs don't allow us to hun coyote with anything bigger then 223.

But I did take 4 deer with my rfb , the first 3 with a burris ar 332 3x fix power. I changed it out for a Burris e1 3-9x40 for more flexibility then the fix power, as it easy enough to make long shot with the 3x but it's kind of hard to identify a buck , morso a spike at long distance. Also the light gathering capability of the 332 were not good and the e1 3-9x40 is fantastic!

Option 3 is a muzzle brake.

Thanks rally guy. I use variables and fixed scopes for deer - no problem with that. I was leaning towards a fixed power scope for varmint to keep costs down, get a better scope for my money and possible have a lighter but still reliable scope for the norc. Not having taken any coyotes or wolves here in 'toba but I'm thinking any shots would be a long one so I wouldn't need the low power.

I'm in no rush, varmint shooting is not high on my list. I'd like to finish my build though and the scope is the last item to decide. I don't like my guns to be paper pushers if I can help it.
