Hi guys,

Great forum you have here!
I'm about to buy my first pistol and need some advice. I have been shooting for a long while but never felt the need or desire to get my restricted permit until this year. I went on our annual "Pumpkin Shoot" in New Hampshire and tried all sorts of amazing stuff and it really got my juices flowing. So now I'm ready to buy...
Ok, I should start by saying that I have a Buckmaster .22LR with a red dot on it. Super fun, very accurate and my wife likes shooting it as well. I am now looking for two new guns, a 9mm and either a .40 or a .45.

Choices for the 9mm are down to;
1)CZ75 SP-01 Shadow custom

2)CZ75 tactical sport

3) Sig Sauer 1911 traditional match elite

For the larger cal, I was looking at either a XDm .40 or their 1911 Range master (.45)

i will be using all of these for range shooting and I want to get involved in IPSC shoots as well.
Lastly, I'm in Montreal; where are the best stores to buy from? I've been to the VSP range a bunch of times and they have stuff, also know about Dante in little Italy. Anywhere else?

Thanks
Chris

If you plan to shoot IPSC, keep in mind that once you choose a pistol, you may define the category you must compete in. A DA or DA/SA pistol factory-stock will allow you to shoot any division (whether you will be competitive is different question), however, a SA pistol will restrict you to limited or open divisions. A 9 mm and a .45 will cover all the bases, the 9 mm will be perfect for production while the 1911 style will allow you to compete in the other two.

If you are planning on ipsc, go for the shadow custom. Best production gun in the league :)

Most of the other pistols you posted will place you against people in the open class with their pimped out pistols ( red dots compensators... List goes on :)).

Start with the shadow and see if you even like ipsc.

How did you narrow your selection?

Did you actually shoot them, if not then whenever possible go to a range, bring ammo, borrow/rent your object of desire. I've never had anyone at my range say no to trying their pistol with your own factory ammo. Most are more than happy to let you try.

Pistols are like glove, gonna fit like a glove or you won't shoot well.

I luv the looks of the 1911 as I glance down at it while shooting my Glock.

I would get the CZ75 Tactical sport for the 9mm. It's a sweet gun. Take a look at the Tanfoglio Match, its very similar. Tanfoglio is really under-rated, if you get a chance to try one its hard not to love it. Also an STI Trojan 1911. The Trojan has really large lettering on the side which looks a little ridiculous but it is an awesome gun, I think it's the best 1911 in the sub $1500 range.

As a side note, for all the 'you don't want to be up against 1911's etc etc'...... I look at it this way:
You might as well get a gun you love to shoot, rather than worrying about some rulebook that you may never have time for or get really serious about. You can shoot just about anything for IPSC and if you really get into it I am sure you will then know exactly what you'd want for the division you want to shoot in; then buy the pistol for that 'job'.

Seems like many buy their pistol to suit production division and if you are a new to IPSC chances are you won't be destroying any divisions instantaneously, so maybe just have fun?

You could always buy a production division gun later. None of them are really that expensive and a shadow can be found for around $800 new.

Thans for the responses guys, it's helpful.
I am not too worried about which class IPSC i'll shoot in as I'm just ding this for fun and to collect a few fun to shoot guns. The IPSC stuff is just because I'm a competitive guy and think I can shoot pretty well so far.
I have tried a CZ75 but not the Tactical. I love the way the gun shot and the tactical just look so damn nice!
I have shot a couple of 1911's but both were .45's. One was a Kimber and I honetly don;t recall what the other was. The kimber was amazing and I must have shot 50 rounds through this guys gun but it may be a bit $$ for a first pistol.
Damn, now that I think about it, maybe an X5 would be a nice 9mm...OMG the more I think about it the further from a choice I am getting!

The CZ75 (non-tactical) DA/SA trigger is decent for a DA/SA, my cousin has one. I think the Tanfoglio DA/SA's are better though. The CZ Tactical has a Single-Action-Only trigger which is quite a bit different (much nicer than regular 75/75B).

The X-5 feels extremely high quality and is built really well, beyond the standard sigs (which are aready quite nice). I have only played with it (not shot it). I have shot the 226R Elite in .40 and it is fantastic, the X-5 can only be better.

better to get the tactical sport in .40 if you go that route, might be shooting IPSC for fun but why handicap yourself shooting minor in standard?
