choke for Trap shooting

I shot a round of trap the other day with my ICchoke, and a round od doubles skeet ( low gun) with the full/mod chokes in my 28 gauge SXS, just for schitts and giggles - my scores did not vary much .
MAYBE a tighter choke would have worked on a few of my trap birds , but for the mostr part the birds were breaking well.

catnthehat,
That just goes to show that a well centred pattern will break no matter what choke and an off centred pattern, maybe not?

Quite true. Shotguns are sensitive "creatures" in that fashion. Proper gun fit coupled with appropriate (proven) load combo and magic starts to happen.

I must say, it sure does wake up the "sideline coaches" with all the latest tech talk about wads, loads, and whatever. I usually tell them I don't need to worry about all that stuff because I don't shoot a 12 gauge!:D

Can you please stop talking about how damn good the 28 gauge can be?

When you start smacking them WAY out there with the 28 people who don't know think it's because the shooter is good. Maybe we should keep the secret to ourselves. ;)

If you have a short barrel you do need a tighter choke because the bird is further away from the end of your barrel, what's the matter with you.

I would start with a full choke for two reasons. One is, you will learn where the gun shoots best by using a full. It will teach you to smoke the targets and not chip all of them. Two, most new shooters break the target quite a ways out and you will still have a tight enough pattern to do so with a full choke. I think it it way more impressive to smoke 24 targets then just chip 25. The only time I use anything less than full is for my first shot in doubles. I use an I Mod for that and full for the second shot. Most important thing above all else, have fun !!

X2. We count targets we don't grade them.

X3 I'll take the 25. The grading is true. I'm interested if I chip a bird though because it usually tells me where my shot went. I've tried to explain to my shooting buddies that it takes real talent to just rim them, but I don't think they believe me:D. I just can't understand it .
Good point about doubles though. I use IC or M for the first shot myself and skeet might even be better if you are really quick.

I've been shooting 16 yard trap recreationally; twice a month for the last year now. When I started, everyone told me I need to shoot a full choke. Period.

It wasn't long before I was getting on the birds quicker and it didn't take a rocket scientist to realize that I was handicapping myself with a full choke. So I screwed in my modified tube, my scores jumped, and I haven't looked back.

What has worked for me: When I started, I used a mod to get my gun pointed in more or less the correct direction. By the time I was able to break my first 25, I switched to full. Now I "expect" to break 25 every time I come to the line. Doesn't always happen, but that is where I put my head. I always use extra full because it forces me to not be sloppy about when I pull the trigger and gives great feedback.
On a day I feel confident I compete with extra full, if I am off a bit, I drop back to full. For me it is a mental thing.
Results may vary.
