Choke selection 12ga trap/skeet/sporting clay

Quick question if I'm crushing targets in trap with a IC choke (Some guy thought I had a full choke in), should I still swap to a full choke? New to trap shooting hitting about 50-60% targets per round.

Hitting 50-60% targets in trap is not "crushing targets". It's a good start and fine for a beginner but competitive shooters hit 90-100% of their targets. With an IC choke you are basically throwing shot in the general direction of the target and hoping for the best. Switch to a Mod or IM choke. Your shooting will get a bit worse and then it will get a lot better.

If you are a beginner, you are likely shooting late, so try a Mod, or IM.

Sorry i meant like turning them into powder so that means my patterns good? Doing well in like the middle positions hit like 10-14 of them then struggle on the the outer positions,

My advice is learn how to set up on the various stations properly, learn to swing in front of the bird , and yes, the vast majority of trap shooters use the tightest choke for their gun.

In fact recently I shot a round of 16 yard with a skeet choke and there was no doubt about the breaks and my score was the same as if I had used a full choke which is what I normally use.

Then again, you are not a new shooter, most of whom hesitate, and shoot later, at longer distances.

Have used IC for first shot in doubles always ,not that I'm a great doubles shot but my mentor who broke 400 straight always used it so ...

Being primarily a skeet/sporting clay shooter,I don't shoot much trap, but when I did shoot doubles, I used mod/full, and it worked well. I typically use M when I shoot wobble trap from the 16 yd line. Most of the people that shoot more trap at our clubs used either LM/M in the first barrel and IM/F, in the second barrel.

All you have to do is break the target, not vaporize it into a million pieces. The better trap shooters tend to shoot the first shot on doubles quickly so the open choke works well for them.

When I talked about using IC from the 22 yard line and SK from the 16 yard line successfully I think that the underlying factor is that it dispels the notion that it can’t be done because you won’t have a dense enough pattern. It’s possible that your load/choke combination can develop holes in the pattern that further targets can fly through but good ammo and choke tubes should not. This is where patterning you gun with the load and choke that you intend to use can gain you valuable information.

As a further side note of interest, I won a flat of Winchester 12 gauge 7/8 oz 1400 fps 7.5 about 20 years ago and decided (in the interest of science) to try them out from the 27 yard line at informal trap. If memory serves I broke 22 or 23 using a full choke. The breaks were certainly not what you’d call “inkballed” but there was no doubt about the breaks. When the old veteran shooters found out what I’d done most of them didn’t believe it since they all subscribed to the use of full choke with 1 1/8 oz loads from the 16 yard lines so this could not have been possible! Would I do this in competition, not a chance, 1 1/8 oz of shot could possibly gain you one target and competitions are often won and lost by one target. I’m just saying that the paranoia of tight chokes and heavy loads is in some cases a bit overblown … in my opinion.
