Choke tube(s) Trap and Skeet - need help

Hello all:

Ok I was looking for choke tubes for my Rem. 870 as mine has a MOD. choke in it and I would like to replace it with a proper one for Trap and Skeet, Keep in mind I have no clue about choke(s)
I went to look online and that only confused me even more there are numerous brands types and kinds (flush mount/ported/Trap and Skeet/ Full) I was under the impression I need a FULL choke for Trap and Skeet?
Can someone help me out here?

Hi Tim,
your mod choke is fine for trap, but for skeet, the tightest I would recommend is improved cylinder. If you can find a skeet choke, so much the better. Even for trap, i wouldnt recommend a full for someone starting out.

I do trap shooting occasionallly and with modified choke I can hit most of the clays. I don't think full choke would be good for trap unless you're very good shooter. If you have no luck with modified you could try less restricted than modified choke like improved cylinder.
 
Most choke tubes that come with the gun are not of good quality and don't pattern very well. Often, they do not match the constriction as marked (ie: marked mod, but are actually a full).

Trap and skeet are very different games and you realistically need two different tubes to shoot two different games. Aftermarket tubes are available from a number of sources, Briley being probably the best known one.

Improved modified (.025 constriction) is a good all round choke for trap and a "skeet" choke (.005) is good for skeet. A gun shop in Winnipeg will likely sell aftermarket tubes and should have a bore gauge to measure the bore on your shotgun. They can then order the appropriate tubes for you from their supplier. They should cost somewhere in the $65 range for each tube. Oh, and buy the extended tubes. If they can't measure the bore and or pull a "Rem choke" out from under the counter, go somewhere else.

So the extended choke tubes is the way to go then?
Do they make extended choke tubes with break in them for trap? in IM??? ANy suggestions to brand or make or type???

All the aftermarket folks make IM (improved modified) tubes.
I have had very good success with Briley and Trulock. There are other really good ones out there as well, like Carlson's. Here is a link to the Briley web site ... http://www.briley.com/

First off thank you for info.
And the bold quote above I thought that a choke tube with muzzle break was available to take up some recoil so I thought hmmmm not a bad idea if available.
I will check out those web sites now.

If you're going to the expense of getting a couple of briley choke tubes like in the picture, You might as well go all out because the expensive ones aren't much more expensive than the cheap ones :)

Extended chokes would be the way to go because you can put them in and take them out by hand, without a wrench. For trap, some guys use a modified, which you already have, most use full. I use an improved modified (the step in between modified and improved) and it works well. I would suggest that if you're going to buy one. For skeet, buy a "skeet" choke. It's the most open choke and gives a larger pattern, which is what you need for fast moving, close targets.

Ported chokes do indeed reduce felt recoil, though with standard sporting (target) loads it shouldn't be much of an issue. But like I said, if you're spending the money, you might as well go all out. I'd take a look at these:

Wow thanks it gives me more things to think about like maybe a better gun.... or maybe one proper choke for trap for 870 and just stick to my Tikka for actual trap and skeet.
I guess I need to think what my next move is until then practice more.

If you're still trying the games and you're using a gun that you may outgrow you're cheapest and simplest option is to go to Cabela's or WSS here in town and pick up a run of the mill full rem-choke for trap and a skeet or improved cylinder for skeet
 
You can also go with Trulock Choke tubes.

I found their customer service staff very helpful, and prices are very good. I have a set of Trulock chokes for my Mossy SA-20, and had my dads Win 1500 XTR tapped for chokes, Trulock chokes were supplied

Most of the guns I shoot skeet with are IC/MOD field guns, and I have no problem switching to the MOD barrel on incoming birds if I choose to - which I do often.

I wouldn't worry about it too much of that is what is in the gun, concentrate on the hard edge, swing properly and follow through, and it'll break 'em.

MOD chokes are fine for trap as well....
