Chokes and slugs?

Hi guys,

Although I carry a Remington MM here on the ranch, I don't know too much about other types of shotguns.

A friend who is about to get his PAL asked some questions about chokes and slugs, so I thought I'd just cut-and-paste his questions here ... and ask you guys for some help. Thanks very much. - Ron

Does use of a slug in a shotgun require the straight bore (not "modified" choke)? (I've forgotten the term for a shotgun barrel that has no choke at all.) In other words, can a reasonable choke for duck hunting (I think that is called "modified", but I'm not sure.), say, also serve for slugs? And, also, then, in the same vein, can the same shotgun serve with birdshot, buckshot, and slugs? (I'm thinking relatively inexpensive shotgun. In fact, single shot. And I think, for maintenance, and no great need for slug accuracy, smooth bore would be preferred over rifling.)

You can fire any common slug through any choke except "turkey" or Extra Full. There is more concern with firing steel through chokes than soft lead slugs which are easily swaged by even full choke. Accuracy may suffer at worst.

Should look at the manual for the shotgun too. Some are designed to be fired only with a choke in place IC or MC at a minimum for mine even if it is with a slug, otherwise you can damage the internal threads for the changeable chokes.

Just my 2bits worth.

modified personally unless it's a fixed full. My single (full choke) is pretty accurate out to 30 yards as it's 2" high and right were I put the bead. My BPS with the modified at 40 yards is about the same. I don't need my slugs past that distance they are a last resort round as I hunt with my 308.

Generally, slugs are designed to safely pass through choked barrels. Modified choke would probably work well for buckshot and slugs as well as birdshot. The only chokes that should not be used with slugs are some of the "extra-full" chokes, which have a tighter constriction than standard full chokes.

By the way, a barrel with no choke at all is called cylinder bore. Here is a brief article explaining shotgun chokes:

Different manufacturers may of course use different constrictions for a given choke.

If you want a shotgun that will fire all type of shells, get a smoothe bore barrel and removable chokes. You can choose the choke that best suit the type of shot you are using at the time. Cylinder, improved cylider, modified, full, extra full and even rifled chokes. I think I missed a few, but those are the main ones. A rifled barrel is for slugs only. Generally rifled slugs are meant for smooth bore and sabot slugs are meant for rifled barrel or smooth bore with rifled chokes. The manufacturer usually specifies on the package of the choke tube what type of shells can and cannot be used with it.

 Thats right!

One last thing, never fire a shotgun that has interchangeable chokes with no chokes installed, or any exposed choke threading. Get a cylinder bore choke or a thread protector choke if you want cylinder bore.

Just don't shoot it with exposed threading. Ever.

Am I the only one that thinks that is pretty friggin' obvious? Sorry if I sound like a ####...
