Okay so yeah, I ate somethin' bad and ordered a 410!!
It's a FAIR Jubilee and a very nice one, I don't have too much trouble with doubles from station 3,4, or 5 with it, but something is nagging me.
IIRC every danged 410 I ever shot was a field gun and it was choked FL/MOD
But from what I understand the skeet guns are usually SKT/SKT.
What gives?
Anybody ale to tell me WHY a field 410 would be choked tighter?
I mean, the ranges I shoot at are usually birds at are about the same distance as skeet , so am I missing something?
Why not use a choke that is more open?
Anybody??

I would guess a field .410 is generally choked tighter as most people use them to shoot fairly stationary game (grouse on the ground or in trees for example). The .410 is a pretty challenging 'on the wing' gun. Opening up the chokes would be quite adventageous in this situation, but keeping the tighter patterns would probably make it effective to 30 yards for stationary game.

Brad.

That's what I was thinking, but I have not or ever will shoot a bird in a tree or on the ground with a shotgun - not that I begrudge those that do!

I'll find out prety quick on how it works on Huns and ruffies!:D

I understand that the industry standard for patterning smooth bores is 40 yards. I heard that the standard for the .410 is 25 yards. I think that if one were to measure the restriction in a cross section of (skeet) target .410s the restriction would average more than the restrictions for the larger gauges designated skeet.

Since 410 has less than half the number of pellets of a 12, it needs a much tighter choke constriction to ensure a 3 pellet hit on a clay target, at similar distances. :)

This Saturday in the UK, they had the BASC 410 English Sporting Championship. It was won with a 76/100. They were definetly NOT skeet-in-the-woods type of targets! They were regular English SPorting targets with speed and distance.

Best regards,
Henry;)

THAT would have been something to see - a pile of guys have a ball with a shotgun most think is too small for anything but a mouse!!:D
I like this little gun so far, and am sure it will improve my overall shooting.
Handloading for the little bugger seems to be a bit of a pain though, but the bugs are getting worked out - just happened to have some lil'gun around !
