chokes installed on 14" 590a1 or 14" 870 ?

Been kinda wanting to hunt down a 14" 590a1 with fixed mod choke but figured why bother, just get my 14" a1 threaded for Rem. chokes. Also contemplating getting a 14" 870 barrel done.

Any of you guys do this to your 14's ?

Was it worth the improvement for buckshot or rifled slugs ?

What constriction choke did you settle on ?
 
took a couple of shotguns out and fired at cardboard at thirty yards. the guns were a wingmaster with a choked 12.5 dlask barrel and a 14 inch cylinder bore police 870. the patterns were somewhat better for the choked gun being a 16 inch spread for the dlask and about twenty inches for the 14 inch cylinder bore with a few pellets for both guns well outside this circle. i was shooting number 4 federal buckshot two and three quarter 34 pellets. the dlask barrel has a modified screw in remington choke. as you may well know a shotgun barrel is a fickle thing and the results using other ammo could paint a different picture. i am going to experiment a little to see if i can improve the pattern using other ammo and chokes. slugs from both guns seem to be about the same for accuracy at 100 yards using a rifled choke in the dlask and shooting rifled slugs. sabots from the rifled choke keyhole and are a waste .just not enough rifling i would suppose .
 
it was such a beautiful day here in south western Ont. i decided to see what the 12.5 dlask barreled shotgun would do with a full choke and the same number 4 federal buckshot. the pattern increased in size. not what i was expecting at all.i had heard that buckshot especially the large sizes does not always react to a tighter choke in the way you would expect.

I've seen the same thing happen farmer47 .... seems reverse of logic.

I think the IC might be the way to go with #4 BK, at least from what I've seen.
 
That YouTube ... ummm ... let's say "personality" .... James Yeager .... did a video series comparing shot patterns with everything from a 14" barrel to a choked hunting barrel and found little difference in shot pattern with buckshot at I think it was 20 yards or something (shorter range anyways).

I've heard some members on here say that a choke made a bigger difference with bird shot with the shorter barrels and that's what a lot of guys like to shoot clays etc with.

I guess it depends what you want to do with your 14" barrels whether it's worth it or not.

Exactly why I'm inquiring City Boy, recall reading something similar. .... choked short barrels worked better with birdshot vs buckshot.

Use would be buckshot, 00 or #4. HD and predator problems up to coyote and wolves. Just trying to extended the usable pattern a little bit.

I don't have any 14s, or any barrels with removable choke tubes for that matter, but if I did I'd mostly be looking at maximizing patterns with cheap birdshot, as to get better practice value out of it.
