Choosing 9mm

Hi everybody,

Have a question for all: if you had budget/place in the vault/wish to buy only _one_ 9mm what would be your choice?
I am looking for something fun to shoot and possible to get into IPSC later.

I have tried CZ 75B in my club - didn't like its trigger and how it feels in the hand at all.
Tried S&W MNP - seems to be ok, but don't really feel that much "fun" with it.
Tried trigger on some 1911 (don't recall the maker) - it was fun, but don't want to buy 1911

Thinking about Glock 17 or may be Beretta 92fs. Do you have any other ideas what would feel nice in my big hand and have smooth nice trigger?

A CZ 75 Shadow SP-01 will be the best bang for the buck if you want to use it for IPSC. If you got a bit more budget, Shadow 2 is the newer version. I didn't have experience with CZ 75B so can't say if its the same or if the Shadow is better.

Best bet will go to a range that has rental guns and try them all.
 
Go to a gun store and ask to try triggers out.

I recommend a walther. As a striker fired gun.

Or an upgraded Glock trigger.

As far as triggers go it is very personal.
 
if you don't like a CZ trigger, and the B model is the worst of them, I don't see how you'll like a Glock or 92

CZ shadow with different grips. There is also some different grip geometry in the beavertail area. Not your choice, but you asked what my only 9mm would be, and after having glocks, a beretta, a 1911, and shooting M&P and XD and who knows what else, and also having big hands, the CZ is my gun, either with the rubber grips the shadows come with, or with the VZ Palm swell ones.
 
I started shooting ipsc with a Beretta 92fs it's a great gun however I'm not a fan of safeties and the slide design makes it a ##### to powerstroke without pinching your hand. I think a sig might be a good option if your looking for a steel gun that works for big hands,the glock is a glock not much else to say about them.

Yeah. I get that a lot. Thanks. Not sure what is wrong with CZ's but just personal preference I guess...

What does it mean "glock is a glock not much else to say about them"? Good reliable gun? Something else?

Glocks comment, just means there isnt anything very special about them. Triggers are ok, feel is ok, nothing special that way... But reliable as all heck not much goes wrong with them.
Same can be said for many of the other "plastic" guns but typically glocks are the measuring stick by which all others are measured lol.

What was it about the trigger on the CZ that you didnt like?

Well... hard to say specifically... everything? ))) travel effort, lenght, feel of it.
I come from the world of bullseye shooting where trigger of S&W model 41 is "just a start".
I get it - 9mm should not have that "light" trigger, but I prefer to feel how it "works inside" if you know what I mean.

Couple of 1911s I tried had such feature - nice triggers. I am wondering if anything else has the same...
 
Honestly, if you are looking for only ONE 9mm and have the budget for it, then get something a little different rather than a run of the mill SIG, Glock, S&W, Beretta, CZ etc.
My recommendation would be a P210, a HK P7M8, or a custom 1911 like a LB or Wilson Combat etc.
Something with a little wow factor and collectibility.
 
Depends on the budget and what firing system you want. The FNS-9 and Bersa Thunder 9 are great guns and would be my choice in the sub $700 range. I've also heard good things about the Canik TP9 and Girsan but never shot either. For a few hundred more you can get yourself into a P320, Glock 17/19, Walther PPQ, P226, CZ75/85. P226 with the classic grips is nice for big hands but the trigger is no better than the CZ. Never shot a PPQ but everyone I know who has raves about them. G17 is a workhorse with tons of aftermarket support. P320 is soon to become the new standard in Polymer guns in my mind. It's a more natural fit for most shooters, the trigger is decent, and the aftermarket will rival the one for Glock within a few years.

If you're just going to try IPSC for fun and have no intention to compete then buy whatever makes you happy. If you intend to take it seriously then carefully review the rules and allowable guns for each class. Budget at least an extra $300 for extra mags, a good holster, and sturdy gun belt.
 
Just saw your post ref the 41. If that's your standard you're in for disappointment.

The best 9mm triggers I have pulled; Pardini GT-9, Sig X5/X6, S&W 952, CZ TS, and the higher end 1911's. The P210 is an exceptional firearm, but the trigger reset is loooong. Of those listed above the TS is the most economical at around $1500. It also meets your criteria of fitting large hands - may be worth a look.

"but the trigger reset is loooong" - ok. at least you got my idea why I might not like the beloved CZ...

I own a Glock17 but I actually really like the M&P9. If you found M&P9 is not a lot of "fun" then you might find Glock less fun. But then the Glock is so reliable it never failed me. The most fun 9mm gun I have is actually the Alfa Proj but that is just my personal opinion... diff people have diff preference. If I know shooting revolver is this much fun I would have bought it first. However, most people don't like revolvers... but then there are a few really like them. I am becoming one. I see a 357 in my collection soon.

TC, only you really know which gun you really like. I guess try to shoot as many as you can then decide. I don't think you will have just one 9mm ever. Eventually you will get more then you'll find true love. For easy, common replacement parts, mags and upgrades you can't go wrong with the Glock.
 
Sig P226 Legion for me. Hands down my favorite gun I've ever shot.

If I could get over my hatred of manual safeties, an STI 4.0 DS 9mm would be one of my dream guns.
 
If you like the Beretta 92FS go for it. I prefer the recoil impulse of the Beretta over my CZ's FWIW. As far as reloading use the slide release lever The slide release lever method is faster than the overhand method or so says Vogel. Too, you are less likely to fill your hand with brass shards by using the slide release. The 92A1 version of the 92FS has dovetail cuts for the front and back sights so you can replace the front sight with FO if you want to. The gun weighs in at 33 ounces due to its alloy frame without any noticeable increase in felt recoil.

If you are going to shoot IPSC Production you might want to stick to DA/SA guns to take advantage of the lighter trigger pull of the SA. IPSC has a 5# minimum first trigger pull.
