I have a budget of about $600. What type of .22 would you guys recommend?

I tried a Ruger Mark III and thought it was decent, but I didn't like the sights. I'm sure different models have different sights so I could probably get one I like. These seem to be pretty inexpensive, which is nice.

How are the Sig Mosquitos? Are they expensive?

Any other guns I should consider?

BTW, it's just for fun shooting at the range.

I own a Sig Mosquito: Not bad for your first, & I’ve seen them listed for under $600 for the kit with the red-dot sight, but in all honesty I have not fired it much lately as I picked up a .22 sub cal for my Glock 17 and now I only have to take one gun to the range.

The Sig can be a pain to keep clean but you get what you pay for. Keep checking the want adds for a used one or find someone in your area that has one, & perhaps they will let you pump a few rounds to see if its what you
really want.

I like the layout & the feel of the Ruger, & the Kimber is a nice but expensive piece of kit. But like everything else, its personal preference, tempered with disposable income that will make the final choice..

You will eventually want to move up on calibre, so perhaps looking at a 9mm or 40 S&W may deserve a look! & its possible to get .22 sub cals for most 9mm.

Go to your club & ask around. You never know you may find someone who is stepping up and wants to get shot of a .22.......

Cheers

Mike

I like the Walther P22 and the Sig Mosquito. I have a P22 and could shoot it all day. I wish it didn't have to have the stupid extended barrel, but I'm glad Walther made that model or else I wouldn't be able to own one.

If it were for ultra accurate target shooting, I'd avoid the P22. It's a nice accurate gun, but not like some .22s. For plinking fun, it scores very high for me.

If you have massive hands, it may not be the gun for you.

The Mosquito is a fun gun too and often comes in the target configuration with a red dot sight and other accessories.

Brand new, you're looking around $550 for the Mosquito and maybe $450ish for the P22.

If I am in your shoes, I'll be stretch my budget for 50-100 bucks and get used S&W 41. For that money it's fantastic pistol. I noticed that you are looking for fun shooting at the range, but it's even more fun to do that from such good pistol. If you get tired of it, you will always get your money back. If you prefer revolver, look for S&W K22, 17 or 617, can't go wrong with any of them. As for Walther 22, see http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=204832&highlight=walther+slide+crack, http://www.thefiringline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=172363 .

I would look for an older S&W Model 41, Browning Challenger (the first generation, Belgian-made one), or Colt Woodsman. Most modern .22's are quite cheaply made and do not hold a candle to quality old-school .22 pistols.

Walther P22 is great little pistol if it fits your hands. I myself just love Unique (oldie but goodie) but I doubt you will ever find one. Generally, have a good look for well used older 22 pistol. Check "trade ex" for example, I bought Domino from them some time ago and my Unique from there too. That Browning Challenger for 295$ looks good to me for example.

Also for budget 22 pistol check Marstar Notinco deals, M93 for example is ugly as sin but surprisingly accurate and reliable pistol for 149$.

X2.

The Walther p22 just looks ugly as sin to me. I guess it's the barrel extension that makes it look so bad, but even without it, I don't like.

Going to look around for a sig mosquito, maybe ask at the range to see who has one.

Maybe look at a wheel gun, S&W K22, model 17, same thing, never jams, don`t need to strip to clean, usually lasts a lifetime, also no action jams, take a look.

mosquito

If you get a mosquito get serial number above 40000, these are second generation, mine is in the 56000's and I really enjoy it. At first it was picky with ammo but now I would guess 1 in 50 is a problem of some sort. I bought the ext. barrel version which I like better than the sport and Wolverine gave it to me in the sport package (red dot, holster, spare mag..... It was $540.00 last year and I think it is still the same price.

Ruger Single Six stainless

I just placed an order for a Ruger Single Six. IMHO, its good to start with a single action revolver, set your pace and fire! Revolver of this kind can shoot all kind of ammo, 22short, 22long and of course, 22LR. With the extra cylinder, you can also shoot 22WMR. One gun, lots of fun. Regarding price, check it out at Ellwoodepps, the cheapest will be the blued one for $465, stainless for $508 and the new model with scope mount for $638. It will last forever!

Save yourself some grief and get a Ruger MKIII.

X2

If you don't like the sites you can replace the front with a HiViz for ~$50

I did this on mine and it is great.

I decided I wasn't going to clean it until it jambed. Almost 1000 rounds so far and I still haven't cleaned it.

Gobles in London had a S&W 41 for $600 (or $650?) on Tuesday. Mine is a 70's vintage A-series.

PS the K-22 S&W model 17's are nice too!
