First off, I'll freely admit that I'm a bit recoil shy. I'm not a big guy, and while I don't find it hard to stand behind most guns once, with heavy recoil I find it really takes me a long time to recover. I was going to go 870 with a 14" barrel, and something like the wilson pistol grip with AR style stock, but the recoil has got me thinking about going semiauto or 20g, but I don't really know if the reduced recoil would be worth the other sacrifices. What else could I consider on a 870 to cut recoil? Or should I just build it, and if I have trouble shoot lower recoil loads?

Today, I am picking my 870 and go camping, crown land though.
I am very excited, never own pomp in my life, sort of OU and SxS shooter.
Primary use for the shotgun, IPSC three gun competition.

IMHO you can't go wrong with a Mossberg 500. Granted I was raised with one. An 870 just feels awkward to me, yet they are great guns. YMMV.

You can not beat a marine magnum for (Italian accent here) "Foget about it" shotgun care. I've had my MM in some horrendous weather conditions and it still looks/functions great.

Ditto on the Remington Marine Magnum. Wet or dry, clean or dirty, heavy load or not - it performs exceptionally well. My wife is knee high to a grasshopper and with the limbsaver on it she can go shooting all morning with the boys and come home without a bruise (using winchester AA trap loads). If you have the coin - get one of these, well worth every dollar spent on mine. :)

Yeah, pick your gun and then address recoil. Knoxx specop stock is a great idea, limbsaver pads really tame the gun down, make sure the gun is sized to fit you proper, etc etc.

There's so many good ways to tame the recoil, that really if you're holding it properly it shouldn't beat you up once you've used some of the tools out there. If it still gives you trouble - wear a shoulder recoil reducer when practicing. There's no shame in that - nobody want's to get beat up shooting. That'll take care of you for practice, and in the field no one ever feels recoil anyway.

I am surprised no one has mentioned the Knoxx Spec Ops stock for dealing with the recoil.

x2 Try set it up as a low recoil 870. The knoxx stock would be the best way to start and you can add a pad to that. I have a 12.5" 870 that sees more slugs than anything. Found the 1oz slugs are a lot softer shooting than the 1 1/4oz slugs. A good set of sights will help as well with reaction time.
