I am interested in buying a NV scope for shooting up to 600 m or more.
What is the state of the art tech?
Are the restrictions to Gen 3, Gen 4 and combined technologies also valid world round?

Only NV available to civilians is Gen II which can be used out to 600 meters max range The Gen III+ Rifle systems run from $10,000.00 all the way up to $20,000.00 and they are restricted/controlled items requires an End User ,LEA/Mil only sales. These systems can reach out to targets 1000m and beyond

Gen 4

What about Gen 4? How far can they reach?
I not sure but I read something about 2 Km.

The same distance it only gets lighter and smaller , tube performance has a longer life cycle under most condition's . It should be noted that the GenIII + units are not stand alone night vision scopes there is no maginifaction ability and have a normal viewing distance of a bout 100m if used a viewing device.

You mean for the distance it will have to be used something like the PBS-27 Night Vision Riflescope on the pic bellow.

Yes ,the higher end units like the Knights take up less rail real estate about half the size of that unit , weigh about half as much less and offer about twice the performance of that set-up , Which I believe will offer at most 600m of actual range and at limited magnification.

Good nightvision is not cheap. One day , if I get rich, I'll get a pair of Gen II goggles, just for fun.

I live right in the woods, it gets pitch black at night. Plus I'm a night person.

Someday..

Insight

Another interesting option comes from the insight technology NVM. It can be used on a rifle, as a monocular or in cameras.
It is light and small, waterproof up to 20 m. It is also Gen 3, this is it can not be used by civilians in many countries.

Thermal NV

What are the advantages of the thermal NV over the classic NV gen 3 devices? Do they also need an IR illuminator...

Can be used day or night thru smoke both chemical and natural as well as fog, views heat signature only hard to identify actual target features can be easily defeated by reducing sources heat signature. There are no advantages to using thermal over Gen 3+ to get the most effective use they should be used in conjuncton. No IR illuminator required
