Given a choice of a new Mossberg 500, a Remington Express or a 40 some-odd year old Ithaca Model 37, in 20 gauge for chukars, quail and grouse, which would you pick?

The Ithaca is by far the better gun, but fit is most important. It should also be the lightest of them all, I expect, which is important in an upland gun.

Don't worry about whatever the fixed choke is; it can be easily opened by a gunsmith.

If any lefties are reading this, (left handed of course) the Ithica is a bottom ejector.

I just found this out last weekend while looking around at the prospects of ordering a left handed 870. I will say, after handling one in the gun store that the action release is a little cumbersome to use with the left pointy finger. Overall, though, I found it to be a nice gun in the hands, and very light.

I still may go with the 870, but I thought I'd pass this along.

Thanks.

What do you think an old Ithaca in used but decent shape is worth?

The 870 youth Express in 20ga is a good deal, esp if you can find a full length stock to replace the shorter butt youth jobby.
