Choosing barrel length for my 700P?

Hi guys,

My 700P currently has a 26" barrel that I want to get cut down. I was going to go for 20" or 22". Any reason I should choose one or the other?

Thanks!

Rem

p.s. This was originally another thread but I finally got a call back from a shop confirming they had a gunsmith in store (I wanted to ask the above anyway).

How much is 8t going to cost you to cut it?

If you look around a but you can usually get a take-off barrel cheaper. Then you have a spare barrel too.

It's only going to cost about $60. I originally never wanted a 26" barrel, I wanted the LTR (which is 20"), but the 700P I got was a good deal, so I thought I would do it this way... The main reasons for cutting it would be to make it a little less cumbersome and I've been reading there are accuracy benefits.

well, for $85 shipped i got a 20" takeoff barrel with less than 200 rounds through it.

I am keeping it as a spare as my current barrel is over 3500 rounds.

Where did you read this?

many studies have shown that shorter barrels are capable of the same or better accuracy than longer ones.
it has to do with barrel harmonics and such....

Also, while you may lose some muzzle velocity and therefore ultimately you may lose effective range, you will usually not lose accuracy.

run a 22. My experience with the 308 has been with a 20 in and 22 in lengths. same gun. I find that the loads needed for that extra bit of distance are stout in the 20in format; combination of heavy bullets and large powder charges. however the extra 2 in gave that extra little juice to make 1000+ more possible with out my bullets going trans sonic sooner. rule of thumb is what? 25-50 fps for every inch gained or lost? sometimes that little extra gassing room helps.

I'd go 22", for the only reason that any shorter of a tube would look funny with the long forend of the 700P. LTR's have shorter forends and look better with the 20" tube or shorter

I'm glad you guys said so, as I was teetering towards 20", but I like the middle ground of 22" now that I've read your input. Thanks!

p.s. I didn't get fully into it yet, but "The Truth About Barrel Length..." is a great article so far. I've seen a few more like it.

I dropped a Rem LTR into a McMillan Tac Hunter stock. Looked good and was very well balanced for me.
I'd go to 22" from 26" also if we are talking .308 WIN.
