Choosing trap ammo?

Hi everyone, it's me again :D

So I'm turning in to an avid Trap shooter these days, and I'm weighing a lot of options at this point. I eventually will own a nice, embroidered shotgun, worth lots of dough, that is designed specifically for this sport. But until then, I still have more to learn...

ANYWAYS! I've noticed recently that my shotgun barrel has a ring scratched into the chrome lined barrel. It's about an inch or two ahead of the chamber, so I'll put it at about 4-5 inches from the receiver end of the barrel.

I'm looking at buying some more ammo, and checking in to the different brands that Winchester offers. Apparently they have this new wad, that protects your barrel, and it's only mentioned in the Xpert Game and Target loads.

The point here is: I want to buy more ammo, but I fear that my Winchester Super Speed Xtra Game Loads ammo that I have been buying has damaged my barrel. I will spend a few more bucks on some better stuff, if it proves to actually be worth it. And now I'm looking at Winchester's AA Target(best), Xpert Game and Target(Middle of the road), or Super Speed Xtra Game Loads(cheapest, bottom line). I don't know if I'll be wasting money and just feeding in to their marketing ploy, or if these loads are really worth it. My range allows a maximum of #7 shot. I have been busting clays with the cheapest one, but i fear that the damage to my barrel will become worse. Please let me know what you think here...

Thanks again,

Dan

I am having a little trouble understanding your post. What is a embroidered shotgun? Are they the ones that come with Doilies? The "ring" in your barrel maybe what is called the forcing cone and is perfectly normal. What gun are you shooting?

Modern ammunition won't damage a barrel, by shooting normally. I suspect that the ring is, as Win/64 indicated is, the forcing cone. Shoot the ammunition which works best in your gun. If they all work the same, then cheaper will allow you to more ...

"then cheaper will allow you to more ..." Not sure what this means. You have to finish your sentences so we can understand you better :). Good God Bill you should know better. :)

I too am thinking that you are referring to the forcing cone. Its supposed to be there. Does it look like this?

Could be that its become more noticable to you now, due to powder residue or plastic build-up.

What I meant in my first post, is a shotgun with elaborate etching, not embroidery... Doh!

I guess it looks similar to those pictures. It didn't exist before, and has developed recently.

It was not there for my first two outings with my shotgun. And randomly appeared after I shot off 5 shells at an action range.

I inspect every little detail on my shotgun, and clean it very well every time I use it.

If you can find sale for your once fired Winchester AA hulls I would go that route. You will be shooting quality loads and getting a fair portion of your money back when you sell the hulls & boxes.

I was just thinking who told the OP that AA were the best for reloading? Maybe the 1 piece old style but the new ones suck. If you want the best hull to reload try Rem. STS or Nitros or even Gun Club's all work better than the new AA's. The Federal gold Medals also work well.

I don't see how lead and plastic is going to damage your chromed steel barrel. I suspect you didn't notice it before.

Xpert shots are steel, if you are worry that lead is damaging your barrel, shooting steelshot will just keep you up at night.

No no, this is nothing to do with reloading or shooting lead over steel. Winchester is only claiming that the Xpert shells contain a special wad that protects your barrel.

The ring was not there before, and resembles a series of scratches. What my issue is; Do i bother buying higher priced ammo, that claims specific purpose in target shooting with a special wad? Or do I continue using this shell that has apparently created a ring in my barrel, but is packaged as a "game load"?

Nothing wrong with the AAHS for reloading?? Ok 410,28 and 20 they are better than any remington. 12 ga yes I would say sts over the AA.Gun clubs come on??

Of all the non Brass reloads the Rem. Gun Clubs work well. The new WW AA's suck.

You got me there. I would not load any non brass.
The new AA's are fine in the 28 and 410, get over 10 reloads which I could not get with the compression formed and the 20ga seem to be OK also.

I, too, have a hard time believing that firing a few target loads caused any kind of damage to your barrels.

Have you cleaned your gun since firing those shots? It only takes ONE shot to leave behind powder residue and plastic fouling. I could see normal fouling being mistaken for scratches because, especially after only a few shots, the fouling would be minor and may appear to be pits and scratches when actually it would clean out easily.

My advice is to clean the gun thoroughly with solvent and a brass brush. After wiping with several patches, with the last one lightly oiled, look again to see if those lines still appear. (NOTE: Make sure you go easy on the gun oil. Anything more than several drops on a patch is more than is required and can look streaky itself.)

If those lines/scratches are still there after cleaning, I'd have to agree with previous posters who think you're seeing the forcing cone. The only other possibility (very unlikely) is that there's a visible line where the barrels are joined to the monoblock (assuming monoblock construction). You'd be the first person I've ever known who could see the joint on the inside of the barrels, but I suppose it's still possible, if the barrels are defective.
