Chopped barrel now short stroking

My guess is it wouldn't cycle at all if the valve was closed, but yes its open.

I did add a UTG rail. I shorten the side mounting bolt so it dosn't interfere with the bolt.

Guys, I have never built a rifle that short stroked due to shortening the barrel, and I have done more of these rifles than I can count.
It is situations like this that led me to start my business. This issue is being caused by something else.
So, it could be the barrel has an undersize gas port, no way to know unless properly guaged.
It could be a combination of undersize piston in oversize gas cylinder, again proper guaging tools must be used
Or it could be the gas assembly is too loose on the barrel at the gas port location
Or it could be one of several things. Unrelated to the gas system such as binding.
This work was performed at Dlask? If so, nothing would have been removed from the rifle ie: oprod guide, joe cuts and crowns with everything intact.
I'll tell you what Gas Can. You cover shipping both ways and I'll inspect your rifle for free just this once. I'm curiuos.

So how tight is too tight? All my rifles hand tighten to 4oclock and come tool tight at 6:00 by use of a big rubber mallet.
Guys, giving advice on the internet is all fine and good BUT unless you "know" these rifles from a gunsmith's perspective, the advice you give should be carefully given.
Not trying to crap on anyone but seriously, gas lock tightness will not cause piston binding.
I have offered to diagnose this rifles issue free of charge. I am a gunsmith, with intimate knowledge of the M14. I did not come to this knowledge by reading post on the internet.

ah sorry but yes it will(at least in my case), when i swapped on my glfs from marstar it snugged up at the 12ish pos. iirc, then tightened to the 6 pos, caused binding of the piston

i am not a gunsmith nor do i pretend to be one on the internet ymmv

Well matty. If it came tight at 12 and you muscled tight to 6... That's one rifle I would steer away from if it showed up in the ee LOL
I could take strong offense at your last statement but I'll choose to not play that game.
If you want a tour of my shop and see how a real gunsmith tunes an m14 for correct gas assembly fit and function, come on over and learn somethin.
If I sound a little testy here.... I am. I don't post what I do for fun, I do it to give back to the community that made my business possible.
To the original poster in this thread. The offer still stands for a free full inspection of your rifle

1. my rifle doesn;t short cycle and goes bang every time
2. the problem was the glfs, a few thou on the surface grinder fixed it good,
3. i work on jet engines,we have a full machine shop, your shop will not impress me
4. i thought gun smithing was an apprenticeship requiring schooling and 10 000hours?, not questioning your skills just saying
5. like yourself i am not trying to be a jerk, being basically called a liar for offering advice kind of makes me defensive, why would i make crap up??

.

M14Doc,

Thanks for the offer. It may come to that but I am still not ready to give up.

I did go through the gas system. I am embarrased to say the plug had ALOT of carbon build up in it. Honestly never cleaned it. I did clean the piston and cylinder but never the plug. Never even occured to me, but I now think I have a better understanding of how the system works.

I have to ask. Does the op rod cycle the action or does it just open the action, which is inturn cycled buy the chamber pressure?? I would guess its probably a bit of both.

Even the piston had a fair amount of carbon in it.

I did gauge the port with the shaft of a #48 drill bit which puts it at 0.076"

Not sure when I will be able to get out and see if its fixed.

I had the same problems as the thread starter but it was on a full lenght barrel. Shot about +300 rounds one rainy cold day and then sleeping in a tent. No cleaning....

The day after was a IPSC competition. Of about 130 rounds in the competition my rifle short stroked perhaps +30 rounds. I did´t win :(

Cleaned the pistong and cylinder and now it works fine...

Regards

Update

Well I cleaned all the carbon out the end plug and piston. Still no go. I put on a Dlask/Noveske kx3 copy and it started to cycle about 25% of the time.

Yesterday I cleaned out the chamber, and replaced the piston with a low round count Poly and low & behold I am back in business!!! The new piston seal was noticably better fit moving slower against the vacume it created in the gas assembly.

I have the 3 chamber Dlask brake back on it and had a lovely afternoon doing snap double taps.
