Christmas Ballard Project

This Christmas hollidays I built a Ballard 22. It started life as a Red Willow 45-70 and I converted it to 22 and put a Green Mountain Barrel blank on it. I tapered and octagoned the barrel, built a stock and casehardened it. I have lots more coats of oil to go on the wood but here are pics with 1 coat. I think this will be very pretty.

I used a round column mill to octagon a 45-70 barrel and I know the trials and tribulations you had to go thru to do yours on a table that is too short for the job in one pass....well done.

I have been rubbing in a coat of tung oil each day now and the finish is getting a bit closer. Probably have another 10 coats or so to go.

I rubbed the colors back to antique greys with oil and rottenstone.
