So I was directed to a "Canadian" misc "stuff to sell" type site..... In the pursuit of a python, for a stoopidly low price!

I found a Winnie Garand instead...... For about half what they are selling for in the EE....

The price seems to good to be true.... Seller is in ON, so we came to an agreement to send half funds, seller sends rifle. If I find it is as described, I send the remaining funds.....

Hence the title, Christmas gamble!

To protect myself a little bit I asked for his info, he sent me a pic of his PAL and DL. So I guess we shall see if this pans out or not!

I hope it pans out for you. Best thing sometimes is to get a phone call conversation to feel the seller up and ask for them to take a pick of the firearm and some item of your choice beside it (ie. TV remote, can of coke) This way you know he at least has the rifle and is not trying a scam. I found this one add once and the guy had the pistol for sale a couple of hundred less than the going value. He sent me a pal and drivers licence pic. But it wasnt him. It was someone else's that he duped to send their information. Be careful out there. Sometimes its too good to be true. Just my experience in the past. And ussually safer if they have a good feedback score from multiple people.

This has been my experience as well.... I try to deal with retailers or on sites like this one. I was not "scammed" but I was burned on a deal at firearms Canada back in 09, so I steer clear from that site.

Seller did provide 8 pics of the rifle, his DL and his PAL..... So if I get scammed I can at the very least send the Queens Cowboys after him!

Good luck! There are several other websites where used firearms are listed, and I found most of the good deals to be scammers. Some local ones do appear to be legit, but not so many hot deals.

This deal is good enough that I decided to risk it...... Only time will tell!

Who would send a buyer their ID?

seems sketchy

A scam artist, this is a confidence con. The seller also needs the buyers ID, to scam the next guy. The seller now has the OPs legit PAL and DL to send the next victim to put their mind at ease. They just keep using the current victims ID to scam the next guy and on and on....

I hope it works out for the OP, but I doubt it. The sh!tty thing is paying a stranger by EMT means your money is gone and the popo don't care.

You bet it sounds sketchy. I was about to buy a rifle off another site and the sender send me a pic of his drivers licence, pal and gun club membership without me asking for it. I asked for him to phone me and the call came from a MB area code and his pic address was in Saskatoon. I called the S-Toon police and asked them to go out and check because the seller had stolen id but they said they don't get involved with internet scams.
I hope the Op has good results with his transaction.

Have you reverse-searched the images on Google to see if they've been posted elsewhere?

The picture files were not web based. They hade file names like they came of a computer HD. I did do a Google search for "Garand" "Winchester Garand" and a few other combos. No hits after looking at a few hundred pictures......

What grabbed me was the fact that he had 8 pics of the same gun from several differing angles.....

Right or wrong, I bought the ticket, I'll take the ride.....

I always check the email headers as well. Had one person say they were in Winnipeg, but their email server IP was registered to Zimbabwe. The street address he gave me was a business address next to a smitty's. In an email I asked if he was tired of pancakes. He had no clue what I was talking about. This instance was clearly a scam.

It sounds like buddy is either working the long con or a less-sophisticated honest guy. My bet's on the latter—you'll have to let us know who it turns out!

Just an update for all those interested.....

I'm out $400..... No rifle, the fella who's PAL and DL that was sent to me does exist, but he wasn't the one who was selling the rifle......

He has been informed that someone has "stolen" his ID.

The RCMP were "disinterested" about my tale of woe..... Which surprised me somewhat.....

Other than that, it worked out great!
