Thank you for illustrating this so clearly! I had a rough idea what was involved, but it's nice to see the pictures (and the spring + cartridge tool...)

Now to find a source for USGI bolts... any word on the ones 7.62mm firearms is making, and whether they are making it into Canada?

Oh, also I need my Marstar m14/305/b to arrive.... f:P:

One thing to note is that while some folks might benefit from lapping a Norinco bolt, you WILL increase headspace by some small amount, so please gauge the headspace FIRST to make sure you won't go past NATO NOGO or NATO Field/Reject for surplus ammo, or SAAMI NOGO for commercial .308 - depending what you shoot in the rifle.

If you reload NATO cases using .308 Winchester dies, treat those reloads like commercial .308 ammo wrt headspace.

I am not trying to be a jerk or anything, but why is it that there always seems to be someone all concerned with the headspace issue and always writing the "quid pro quo" CYA stuff?

I bought my Poly, being an absolute doorknob when it came to knowing anything about M14's or headspace, and was told by the salesman that the gun was perfectly fine to shoot commercial 308 ammo, even stamped that way. Then I read the internet posts, including CGN stuff. Scared the hell out of me, got real twitchy when shooting my gun, thinking it would be the last time, because...gasp...I had headspace, my bolt wiggled! I even bought some gauges.

Mine is .0025 over NATO Go, M14 Doctor says it's good, Hungry says it's ok (unless I wanna shoot Match), I leave about .005 gap from FL resizing and have found that mine shoots like a dream. I only keep brass for about 3 to 4 reloads (extractor chews the hell out of them), and have not popped one yet.

So why the SAAMI issue again? I bought cheap Remy ammo for my M14 from Milarm and the stuff shoots really well, and it's totally commercial, not mil-surplus. So what is the big deal? Comments like that needlessly scare the hell outa people. Or is it just me?

It's just you.

No-one is saying it's unsafe to shoot SAAMI ammo in a NATO chamber nder the right circumstances. What I am saying is that by lapping the bolt you ARE changing headspace - you are increasing it. If your Norinco bolt was already on the long headspace side, it will now be more so from the lapping. Hence a smart or careful person will gauge their bolt after lapping to make sure it is still safe to shoot.

It's not rocket science - just basic gunsmithing. If you change headspace, check it to make sure you're still within accepted safety tolerances. That's all ;)

TRW bolts that aren't in the US? Pray tell.

Any in the US, though it might be possible to illegally remove them from the US, are illegal. The State department will not allow their export and if the seller gets caught, he/she could serve time - food for thought.
 
Remember god gave us 1 crevice that cannot be searched with a search warrent or probable cause and anyone who wishes to try otherwise is free to try ... caution , may break nose.. :stirthepot2:

I guess it's just me. Fair enough, I do agree with everything you wrote. I guess I just misread it and then read too much into the statement. :redface:

Gunsmithing advice, for a weekend shooter is always welcome because I just want to pull the trigger and have the gun go boom...without going BOOM!
