A good choice (made even better because it's Canadian) is Shooting Chrony. They are very popular and work well. The "Beta Master Chrony" is a good model to choose. I have this model for about a year now with no issues. They are located in Missussauga and you can even pick it up if you like and save on shipping.

i have the chrony f1 i think its called. paid like $90. works fine.

I have heard many recommend the CED M2 unit over the Chrony.
I got the Shooting Chrony and didn't work so well for me the first time yesterday. Maybe it was too close to the muzzle or I wasn't shooting the desired 6" above donno. It was evening light. Never got any readings past the first 6 or so.

Me Too ...it looks like it would be a good choice...weren't they going to be priced about 4-5 hundred ?
Reloading and the crony,I'm sure your husband will love a crony, it really is the final stage of reloading. Without knowing the velocity of your handloads you are far from having the complete picture of what you're doing. I have had the shooting crony (Betta) and the CED M2, the best bang for your buck is the shooting crony.

Shooting Chrony's can be low light intolerant, to early in the morning or to late in the evening you'll get sporadic results.
I have a Caldwell Ballistic Precision Chronograph. This is a brand new device and is hard to get right now - huge demand! It's only $120 from Cabela's and it very reliable in both bright sunlight and very overcast conditions. I have only had one dropped reading out of 260 rounds fired so far.
What makes this chronograph so great? It plugs into the headset socket of any iPhone or Android smartphone - 20 foot interface cable is included.
The Caldwell App is free to download from iTunes and Google Play. Comprehensive App data can be emailed or sent by SMS text messages.
I have given away my Shooting Chrony Alpha as I would never want to use one again after being spoiled by the Caldwell model.

I just can't see how this would be a good idea and not mess with the harmonics of your barrel.

I've used many CED M2's, in tandem, chronographing many major matches and IMO they are JUNK!
They've given false readings, in that the 2 do not agree, they have crapped out when you need them.
I have 3 chrono's, a PACT Professional, a Shooting Chrony Alpha Master and a Shooting Chrony Beta Master. All have been used chronographing matches and do a better job.
At the matches I use a chrono coffin.
FWIW, I have the Shooing F-1 Chronograph and it works well for what I use it for. Occasional testing of new loads for my rifles and keeping my IPSC loads in check.
If I were to purchase a new one today, I would go for the Caldwell Ballistic Precision Chronograph as previously mentioned.
