What you guys would recommend for good starter chrono? I see several offerings on a website between 130 and 200$.

Would those be good (shooting chrony i think). My budget is limited to say 200. What can I get in this price range?

Specifically, what spec am I looking for in order to get something ready to use.

Get the Chrony, only the second-model-up with the remote reading screen; you've gotta' be at least 6' from the Chrony or powder smoke will obscure the reading and it will error-out; but (unless your eyes are better than mine - a distinct possibility) it's real hard to read the window from 6' away.

Mine measures <470 ft/sec to >3,000; but if you only shoot indoors, the Chrony is no good under fluorescent light.

Without the numbers, for handgun, you will never be 100% sure if it's the ammo, or just you. Sometimes it's not big deal if you just need ok accuracy, but not for serious bullseye shooting.
For long range rifle, it's just impossible to calculate ballistics without knowing the velocity

How does a chronograph improve your shooting?

I use the shooting Chrony. I have several of the different models. They gave them to me...

The one with the remote is handy, unless you have terrific eyes, or shoot in a location where you can step forward a few steps each shot to read the screen.

I avoid shooting under a blue sky, for best results. The sky screens can be installed for then, but I am lazy.

One trick it to be well back from the machine when you shoot. I use 15 feet. Muzzle blast can give you wonky numbers.

If you shoot a scoped rifle, aim nice and high - otherwise you will be testing penetration. I have hit 7 of them so far. Don't try to use a fixed 24X scope at 15 feet....

Remember as well that Chrony's usually won't work under fluorescent light; the 60Hz flicker is too close to the shadow of the bullet going over.

Another big advantage of the Chrony is in comparing reloads. An example - I handload for .455 Webley. The factory load was 750 fps, my reloads are ~625 fps, so I'm not very worried that I'm overloading the old doll. And I loaded as low as I wanted to go, down into a load that was extremely variable - >100 fps variance with a ~500 fps baseline. That's straying into dangerous territory - with an auto-loader, you can't load too low because it won't cycle, but a revolver will eat whatever you feed it. So I upped the powder on that load, and am very happy with the results.

I have the Magneto-speed chronograph and it works well and the other shooters at the range wont throw rocks at you when your messing with the screens and slowing down their shooting.

Shucks Ed...I shouldn't be surprised with this post but I am. I had a different version of what you might use. :d I had visions of something more nostalgic and sage like. :d

OP, I just unpacked a magnetospeed sporter version. Loaded the application for my phone and worked the whole system over a bit to familiarize myself with everything tonight. Amazed that something so little can offer so much.

I chose this over other offerings for price, reliability working around mother nature and for the same reasons that Ed has posted. (I haven't been at this game for too long either.)

Truthfully, I am looking to learning so much more about what's going on.

Ronr

EDIT PS. From the setups I've seen using chrony's over tripods brings thoughts of another vehicle/computer/kid around the house...high probability of aggravation somewhere down the line...at least for myself:redface:

I went with the Shooting Chrony F1 Master.
All the Chrony models seem to use the same software but detect the different board components. I found a Dutch forum with chip numbers and picked some parts up to upgrade it to the Gamma.

I never use the sunshades on mine - it doesn't seem to care. Just the first two metal rods, one on each side to help me centre my aim, with a wrap of black tape around one to show me how high to aim so I don't shoot it (yet...).

One of the gee-wizz freaks at the club has the doppler radar chronograph - me, I'd rather spend the $$$$$ on guns ;)
