I just bought a Chrony Alpha and I find it very frustrating.

you take a shot and it shows the fps
take another shot and it shows the first shot fps
take another shot and it shows the first shot fps

so what Ive been doing is

take a shot,
get up, walk 15ft to the chrony press the function button, wait 15sec for it to exit
take another shot.

this is all fine and dandy when im by myself, but hows this work when Im at the range with others ? I cant be walking into the firing range to press a button every time, that'll go over well.

is mine bust ? or is that really how they work, incase it'll be going back and I'll be buying the master model so I can get the remote.

I have a Chrony, but it is the Beta Master version with remote monitor. I can keep shooting thru the sensors with the reading right in front of me on top of my bench.

When I bought mine I initially bought the one without the remote monitor, then I realized when I was just about to start chronoing the disadvantage. So off I went and replaced it with the one with remote monitor. How much more convinient I would want it to be.

The next shot should cancel the previous reading and show a new velocity for the second shot.

Be sure that you are shooting right over the pickups, in other words, centered between the rods and a few inches above the pickups so that the Chrony is actually getting a reading.

If you are shooting thru the machine correctly and the current shot doesn't cancel the previous reading then the machine is malfunctioning, ask for a replacement.

I gave it a good workout today and it defn was not displaying the current fps, only the original. if I pressed the function button then waited 15sec it would goto a

display, then display the next round, it never missed any shots so I dont think it was an issue with that.

if I left the current fps on screen, didnt touch the display, fired another round, it would not display the new round, just continue to display the original round, if I pressed the function button I could scroll through the history where it logs all the rounds and I could see mine in there. it just wouldnt display it automatically without intervention on my part, very annoying.

it must be defective, I think I'll return it and pay the $20 more and get the master. I can see the advantage anyhow being that it shows the fps right infront of you insted of 15-20ft away. (first shot I had the chrony about 5ft away, the blowby blew both sunscreens clear off, lol)

Are you shooting indoor or outdoor with your chrony?
If you are shooting indoor, you need an indoor light attached to the difuser so the sensors will be able to read the passing bullet properly.
If you are shooting outdoor.... are you using the difuser? You will still need the difuser over the sensors.
Chrony's are very sensitive and picky.

Jus my 2-cents

it was outdoor and was using the difusor. when I would press the function button and let the unit timeout after 15sec it would display the fps every time, if I did not do this, it would record the fps in its memory, just not display it automatically.

Each subsequent shot should read if the bullet passed over the screen anywhere between the rods. If this is not the case there is a problem with the unit, and you should contact the manufacturer and ask them for recommendations.

Having said that, there are some pit falls. Sub-sonic ammo can give false readings. Shooting closer than the recommended set up distance can result in false readings. Shooting at the recommended distance is too close with rifles chambered for large capacity cartridges (.30-370, .338 Lapua, etc) and can result in false readings. Rapid fire with a semi-automatic firearm may not allow the system time to reset between shots.

I have had several Chronys over the years, and never had issues with them except one Alpha, which read about 100 FPS faster than it should have. (Had two chronys, and running them in series showed this problem up) I never use the diffusers unless it is a very clear sunny day. I have found that my Beta and Master both work fine without them on overcast or cloudy days. I like using two, since they are relatively inexpensive, and I can use them in series to prove figures, and also one can calculate the Real BC of any given bullet by spacing them a specific distance apart and doing the math related to the difference in velocity. Regards, Eagleye.

I took it back to wholesale sports and they said there is nothing wrong with the unit and thats just how they work... but agree'd to swap it anyhow, I paid the extra $30 and upgraded to the master, easier to read I think being that I can have the remote close to me.

my first shot I admit was way to close, I had it about 6ft away and my first shot blew both the sun screens clear off, lol. so I moved it about 15ft away, for my next 29 shots. the manual said 15ft is recommended for rifles (Im using a 300wm) so it shouldnt be too close right ?

eagleye thats a slick idea about the bc, I think it'll have to wait though, wife will kill me if I spend another $180 on a second chrony haha.

I got a chance to try out the Chrony Alpha Master today, works like a charm, every shot registers on the display without my interaction, I like the lcd closer to me as well.

Im going to have to build myself a little wood stand to hold the display up though, its quite light and the cable dangling off the table has enough force to prevent the display standing up on its own, lol. 5min with some scrap wood and I'll have something nice lookin rigged up :)
