How many times have you heard people here say "There are two types of chrony users, those who have shot their chronograph and those who will." I guess you now belong to the second group. 
I also found that you had to really back off the chrony to get accurate readings with low pressure, larger caliber handguns. I used to always use my gun rest, but it was a hassle bringing it and carrying it onto the range. Plus I'm a good enough shot to shoot offhanded over a chrony... err... except one time some mysterious force dropped the 230 grain .45 ACP bullet between sensor one and sensor two, and almost took out sensor two:
It still works perfectly! It doesn't look like it, but the sensor is still fine and didn't move a bit. It's just err.. umm... ehhh.. cosmetic damage. But I tend to use it when there aren't a lot of people at the range.

My brother-in-law shot mine with MY 44 mag SBH a few years ago. He managed to take out both electric eyes, the switch and the battery. Oh, and broke the tripod too...
I knew that at the time Chrony offered a discount for a new one in exchange for 'wounded units'.
When I called them I assumed that everyone always said that 'somebody else' shot it so I told the nice lady on the phone that I had shot my chrony by accident.
There was a bit of a pause and then she said, and I quote, 'Wow, you are THE first person I've taken a call from that admitted to shooting their own chronograph."
At that point I just didn't have the heart to tell her that it actually was my brother-in-law who did it. It would have seemed very weak.
Still makes me chuckle when I think about it.
I have since nicked the new one with my 300 RUM but didn't put it out of service.

Grab some wooden dowel from your local lumber store, whittle down the ends if req'd to fit in the sensor holes and skyscreen holes.
These things get shot so often Chrony still has their half price exchange program in place. I never use the sun shades so straws work fine. At least with those, if you hit one it doens't wreck the plastic sensor housing. You will also get much more accurate readings if you set your chrono 15 or so feet away and get out of the big muzzle blast zone, especially with the big magnum rifles.
Wow I guess I am doing good with mine .Had it over 20 years and the only close call I had was testing my shot gun with slugs . The pressure blew the sunshades right off but no damage . I am still not sure if I was few step too close or just far enough back for the chrony to take the full blast.
