I was pleasantly surprised with the Norinco 7.62x51 ammo I got from CanAm a while back. Took some out with my rattly m305 and trusty beta Chrony. For a ten shot string I obtained the following:
Avg MV 2798, extreme spread 57, stdev 18 (all fps, of course )

I like the Norc ammo as well. Bought some MFS a while back and was completely underwhelmed in comparison to the Norc....much dirtier (red lacquer sealant gets everywhere) and not nearly as accurate.

Too bad my M305 doesn't seem to particularly like the loading of the Norc ammo or I'd shoot lots more of it.

Similar results here Met, 2804MV avg@15feet. SD very good. If you look at 762NATO ball spec with it's velocities taken at 25meters(78feet) and compare to 2800ish at chrony distances ~15feet, its bang on M-80 ball which I believe it was supposed to be loaded to originally.

I found at first that there were jams when the steel cases of the Norinco ammo would occasionally catch on the ears of the magazine. The edges of the ears were sharp, so I very carefully rounded the edges with a very fine file (emory nail file, actually). That did the trick, no more jamming!

I didn't mention the accuracy. I can attest that I put ten holes into a 4" circle at 50 yards, offhand, standing, no sling. Kneeling, the next 10 shots went into a 1.5" circle. I'm using a BSA TW4x30 scope on an inexpensive NcStar mount. I need the scope more for my aging eyes' sake.
Hopefully one day I can get out to do a proper 200 yd test from a bench with sandbag rest.

How fast do you think it will come out of a 18.5" barrel? 2400fps? Has anyone chrony'd a short barrel norc?

Ardent probably has it right.

Knocking of 30fpsfor each inch of barrel for a .308 size expansion ratio cartridge loaded using powder with burn rate for light bullets(144-147) for optimum velocity and gas impulse in M-14 type rifles is a good guess. So 30fps X 3.5"-bbl=105fps drop

Usually I allow 40fps reduction for heavier charges of slower burning powder with 165 or greater bullets in the .308Win/30-06 case range.

My 2804avg would now be 2804-105= 2699. This tiny velocity drop wouldn't be noticeable except beyond 500 yards when using your aperture sights. For instance, if your rifle ranged properly with NATO ammo on a 22" bbl, you have zeroed properly at 200yds for POA hits and you dialed up 500yds for a point of aim strike, you'd be striking only 5 to 6" lower at 500 with a 100ishfps slower muzzle velocity on the exact same bullet, that's if my calculation are close.

Again every rifle is a law onto themselves for muzzle velocity using the same load in the same type and barrel wear rifle and may vary as high as 100fps in new rifles, but 30-40 would be more common in my mind. A chornograph is your friend and usually brings an end to any #### measuring contests between shooters using only factory ballistics charts to brag with. Can cause very red faces on the firing point.:mad:
