Chronys??

Just bought a Shooting Chrony F1master a few week backs. The posts and diffusers seem a little cheesy but other wise it works well. I like the master version because you have the digital read out on the bench next to you.

I've owned a few Shooting Chronys. They all died when shot :)
Nowadays I use the cheapest since I write down all the readings and do the calculations in excel.
The more expensive units can do some calculations but if you miss a reading or get an error or have a failure to fire, their statistics are wrong.
That's why I prefer do do my own.

I have a shooting chrony, and I only use it to get an average velocity. Trying to get ES/SD from anything but the high-end chronographs is pointless. When 5 rounds are all touching at 300yds, I know my ES isn't 68fps.

based on what?
I've read accuracy can be good even when the velocity spread is high-ish
At short range that is (300y or less)

Shooting Chrony, only wish I had gone with the one with the remote display, gets a little hard to read the numbers when you move it farther away. Compact enough to fit into my range box, and worked great until I flinched a .45 through the face of it.

I'm noticing a trend here with crony's and handgun's... My personal experiance with a 9mm seems to corroborate the data :D

Silly crony deserved to be shot anyway, like I'm supposed to believe I was pushing a 125gr lead bullet at 1800fps from a 5" barrel with a starting load? Hehehe

All crony's will give you data to work with, how much you wish to spend draws a pretty sharp line on what that data is worth to you.. Just avoid the RCBS unit, I have seen 3 NFG out of the box, maybe they have improved since last spring but still... If your pockets are deep I believe Ohler is available thru MD Gardner?

I also use a Shooting Chrony. It doesn't register anything above around 3100fps for some reason though. The instructions say it's good up to I think 3500 or 4000fps. I use it for mostly cast bullets so that isn't an issue.
I've never shot it even with buckshot but haven't used a pistol over it. There is a dent in the middle metal divider from a friends airsoft gun.
For a while I was using a $350 Manfrotto tripod before I thought about what it was worth (only one I had). Switched to a $25 no-name tripod.

I usually fire some known 22lr ammo over it to make sure it isn't too far off before chronying my test loads.

I'm not gonna shut them down, I never owned one.

Because of reviews I read and feedback I got, I purchased the CED. Also because it's what's commonly used at IPSC Level III+ matches. I feel its a honest bang for the buck.

I find amusing all my buddies who claims owning a Chrony never use it. They sure are pleased to use mine every time I bring it out though. Whatever that means.

LOL, bought mine for the same reason. IPSC... that and I was tired of ERR messages on my chrony while doing 10 shot load development testing....

I would recommend the magnetoSpeed, I have used one on numerous occasions, very convenient not having to go down range to set up or adjust and also no chance of shooting it. Also the clouds or changing sun conditions or position do not effect it.

I know guys have said it effects your barrel harmonics and moves your point of impact but you are not zeroing your scope with it on, you are working on load development and trying to lower your ES & SD, then you take it off to confirm that your groupings are as tight as you are looking for.

If you are looking at spending a little less, there is the sporter version, not sure if it is out yet but is 1/2 the price of the original

I spent a half hour with a soldering iron and 20 feet of twisted pair ethernet cable and moved the LCD panel to a small plastic project box that sits on the shooting table. No way was i going to be able to read the display using the original setup. I should have bought the model with the remote display, but what can I say, I was feeling cheap that day.

I had issues with my Chrony units at times, due to certain lighting conditions, but since switching to Magnetospeed, I have had no issues at all. I have used it with cup and core and monolithic bullets, and it has worked just fine with both.
