Churchill Mauser and JC Higgins Fn Mauser

YAAAAAYYYYY!

Grouse river had one set in stock, Product Code: OPT-000182. Order placed.

J.C. Higgins was listed as "Make" and part numbers checked out.

For anyone looking for Mauser Large Ring scope bases with .860 inch hole spacing in front and rear you may be in luck. As mentioned, these are not commonly found at dealers that stock Warne bases, but still listed on product chart on the Warne web site.

I am one happy camper.

Not a biggie, but the JC has a magazine follower that prevents the bolt from closing when empty. The Churchill does not. I assumed that all sport model "Mausers" had close on empty. Is it possible that it was replaced or were the FN actions fitted like that.

As both barrels are different, i have a hard time finding out the contour names as there it little reliable info about these rifles. The JC is a high standard chrome lined barrel with reinforced chamber area in what looks like a "sporter barrel" contour whereas the Churchill is not as reinforced in the chamber are but has more of a taper contour much heavier looks almost like a "Featherweight" contour.

Will get out my caliper and get some measurements for some valued opinions. Tried to get manufacture year on the JC the last four or five hours. Gotta do something while i wait for scope bases :HFU:

Sounds like the J.C. has had the follower changed for some reason. Mine does not have the last round hold open feature.

Easy to correct as long as it is a milled follower in there. Just bevel the rear edge where the bolt contacts enough to allow the bolt to push it down as it travels forward.

A lot of sporting Mauser have the cut-off feature. Brno, for one have it. Most pre-Supreme FN have it, too. But as JBMAUSER pointed, it's very easily correctd with a Dremel tool. Just do it carefully to not overheat the follower while grinding. It can also be done with a sanding band.

Both receivers look machined. JC is about 3 MM shorter and seems a little higher in the receiver. Will use the Churchill and try to get a replacement before I dremel the one I have. Barrel on the JC is .55 at the tip, Churchill is .59 (standard measurements)

The numbered one is a modified military follower which would have originally held the bolt open after the last round. I'm not sure on the other follower. The machining is pretty odd on it. Almost looks like a Swedish M96 follower but I don't have any of those to compare to right now.

I believe you are right. Googled both and found both identical. M98 and M96.

Some stock issues on both, common as I have read:

Grouping on churchill, not good:

JC, lots of potential. Shot two shot groups as I was running out of ammo (long story)

First shot hit the ground....

Think the JC deserves a new stock and a bedding job on action and pillars. Will have. Smith look at the barrel on the Churchill before I decide what to do with it. The pillars seemed compressed, stock is cracked and grouping sucks, with factory loads anyway.

Love the look of the Churchill, enjoyed shooting it. It may end up as a wallhanger if I need new barrel. Gunsmiths are scarce in my neck of the woods.
