Hi all, I am wondering if anyone has used these CIL 3B and 4B shotshell primers. What's the difference between these two? I have found some data for the 4B primer but can't seem to find any data for 3B.

I am also looking for data for CIL imperial plastic hulls (12 gauge blue/purple with high brass).

Any guidance is appreciated.

Lyman shotshell handbook "first complete edition" has some data for 2 ¾ C.I.L. "CANUCK" plastic cases with a CIL 4BP primer. I can send you some pictures of the load data if you want. I think the powder and wads for the loads are discontinued though.

When I first started reloading shot shells in the mid 70s, I was using my uncle's old stocks . . . CIL Canuck 2-3/4" paper hulls and the same CIL 4B primers as you have. His press (MEC 400 Super Speeder) had a special under size decapping pin for knocking out the old primer, without removing the battery pocket. It also had a special seating tool for re-seating the 4B primers. I would imagine any modern press is set up to handle current 209 primers only. As FortHunter pointed out above, any data you are likely to find for CIL paper or plastic hulls will use powder and wads that are for the most part long out of production (CIL Ram-Wads, PB and SR7625 powder for instance). CIL plastic shells usually had a funky 8 fold crimp that was heat sealed. They never did re-crimp very well and they almost always had a large hole in the center of the crimp, which would leak shot. I'm not trying to discourage you from using your hulls/primers, but unless you have a lot of them, it is hardly worthwhile.

I bought a lot of 209 primers, got a steal on them as he just wanted them all gone. There ended up being some old Remington primers that are essentially obsolete, like these CIL ones. Did some digging and people are using them with great success in muzzle loaders, so that is my plan.

Waste not want not.
