My brother in-law picked up the shotgun at a reasonnable price, but when whe got home and cycled some snap caps in it, we noticed that the action does not unlock once the trigger is pulled, but does when using the slide lock release lever. After doing a bit of digging I came up with a decent write up on this type of action ( http://www.gun-tests.com/special_re...ion-Rifles-gunsmithing-model-170-12516-1.html ). From reading this I did the recommended function test. It seems that the spring is too long for the shepherds hook to be actuated by the lug on the hammer. In fact the lug sits about 1/16" away from the head of the spring, when the hammer is at rest. It's not even close... I don't know if the previous owner tried to replace the spring and ended up with the wrong one or what, but we need to find one that would engage positively. Anyone have a line on such things?
From what I've been seeing, these shotguns were also branded as:
-Savage Model 30
-Stevens Model 77
-Springfield Model 67
There seems to be a wide variaty of sub models and I don't think everyone is clearly interchangeable. Push comes to shove, we might try to reshape the spring, but I would be clueluess as to how that could be done properly. Help!
