Well, I finally got out and did some "civic duty" this morning. Last year, Gopherxs had directed me to a field of his that was in hay. While he toiled away cutting hay, I shot gophers. This morning, I returned to find even more gophers. I shot for about two hours and didn't get very far off the road. I probably smoked around 50 or 75 of the cute little fellers.:p

I am not sure what my warning shot to direct hit ratio was, but it was probably not good. I was using those cheap Westerns that the Co-op was selling for $14.97. I have stainless 10/22, stock except it has been doctored so I can close the action without having three people helping. I have a Bushnell scope on it.

Great way to spend time. I plan to go out again tomorrow.:sniper:
 
Good times. I got out on wednesday afternoon, but after about 1/2 hour some dark stormy looking clouds rolled in and most of the gophers went to ground. I only got 10 or so. Always a good time though, just nice to get out of the city.
 
Darn!! I was forced to go out to Gopherxs' field again today and shoot for 4 hours. Imagine!! Then, to make matters worse, Gopherxs and his brother show up to shoot the breeze for an hour. Gxs smoked a few with his .223. I didn't know gophers could fly.:p

This is getting out of hand. I'll probably have to go again tomorrow and do it all over again.:sniper:
 
now here is a guy with a good sense of 'civic duty'. when we showed up kjohn and his buddy were out blasting away, looked to be lots of dead gophers, and they appeared to be having a good time:dancingbanana: way to go guys, keep up the good work:welcome:
 
Out to Gopherxs' field again this morning for a couple hours. No end in sight. Reinforcements came in from Calgary, a father and son. Sounded like they were fighting off a bad attack along the west side!:p

I am going to bed earlier tonite so I can get out a bit earlier tomorrow. Stupid job gets in the way. Oh well, it seems as though the gophers don't mind waiting. I just kept walking around the truck and holding back the advance. I even dragged out my little short 12 ga. and smoked one.:shotgun:
 
Fought off another huge attack this morning. I got out there and was shooting by 8:30, until 11:30. Incredible shooting:sniper: by me has led to the demise of quite a few of the cute little creatures. I have fired off about 1000-1200 rounds so far, but some are, of course, warning shots!:p

I have been using Western HP exclusively. Out of about 3-400 this morning, I had two duds, no jams. My 10/22 is getting a good workout. My buddy took it home and cleaned it for me before I came out here. There is an outside chance it may need cleaning again....:D

p.s. The wackos who do think they are cute little creatures ought to taken out to Gopherxs' field and see the mess these things have made.
 
Well, wind or not, I had to go out to that same field again and shoot gophers this afternoon. I stayed on the lee side of the truck and plastered a goodly number from about 2:00 pm until 6:00 pm. It was cold and miserable, but somebody had to stay on the front lines.:p
 
Finally got some reinforcements this morning! :dancingbanana: My friend Andy and his daughter came out and helped fight off gopher attacks for a couple of hours. We started shooting at 9:00 am. I kept shooting until 3:00 pm, when it seemed they retreated for regrouping. I probably toasted 200 or 300 today, making for a total of maybe 1200 or maybe more, so far. Still lots there, but I will maybe give them another go later. Stupid job interferes with the whole affair.:p
 
hey kjohn was driving around the hayfield the other day and saw lots of evidence of your shooting prowess,carcasses all over the place. let me know when your going to be back in the area. thanks for the PM.
 
Dang, can you guys in Saskatchewan even grow anything in your fields anymore?

What a plague those little bastards have become! Pretty soon it'll be time to bring the mortars.
