Range Match????
Hm, the whole range match thing just does not hold up very well. The book Civil War Sharps Carbines and Rifles that lists about 4000 serial numbers of Sharps Carbines and Rifles shows that units were not given guns in any orderly fashion. For the most part what we see is that early war units were given early war production numbers, like the 1st California who received their Sharps carbines from the 1st US Dragoons, the numbers were in the 10,000 to the 20,000 range. Later on serial numbers were in the much higher range like the Veteran Volunteer Infantry, their Sharps Rifles were for the most part over 100,000. There is no way you can identify any units that way only early or late war issue. The only sure way is if the serial number is an exact match, close does not count.
