Civilian EAL Rifle

Hi Guys:)

For those of you that have "civilian model EAL" rifles.

I picked up a very nice EAL, civilian model at the Chilliwack, HACS show last weekend.

The rifle is complete and non buggered and doesn't seem to be fiddled with at all, except for the stock finish.

The finish has a shiney, tung oil, look about it.

My question to you is, what type of finish did the civilian rifle have on its stock?:confused:

Stripping off the shiney stuff and applying a BLO finish is easy enough, but I don't want to screw up a good thing.

By the way, the serial number is in the high 44xx range.

All information would be appreciated.:)

I would say BLO is required - if it's needed.

I.e. if the rifle has never been "refinished" with varnish or God knows what, the rifle may just need a good cleaning and then a fresh coat of BLO - I think that's still ok by Enfield standard.

It'd be great to see pictures :)

I've seen some really nice ones that looked pretty shiny. As long as nobody has lacquered it I'd leave it alone. As befits a civilian hunting rifle, nothing wrong with it looking nice. It's not military issue after all...

Show us some pics or email them to me and I'll post em for you. I have lots of EAL pics to compare it to.

Hey, I missed seeing that one. Was there all Saturday and should have spotted the orange butt-pad, oh well. Blew my wad on a .280 Ross Sporter.

longbranch, the guy that had it sold a rifle from his rack and replaced it with another from under the table at 1:00pm on sunday.

My table was only 3 tables away and it took me about 5 minutes to realise what it was.

I could hardly believe it. Reasonably priced as well.

It went to my table and stayed there for the last 2 hours of the show.

The biggest problem was getting people to quit fondling it with sweaty hands, many recognised it right off, there were several lucrative offers, but I had been looking for a clean one for a long time.

This one is unusual in that it has the No4 MKI cocking piece, the only one I've ever seen with it.

Maybe others have seen them with that cocking piece?

There were a couple of Ross rifles, both military and sporters there as well.

Not only is the rifle Bearhunter found a beauty, but look at it's friend...:):cool:
Great chance to contrast the two different common models of EAL...btw, note how EAL patched the spot on the forend where the tie strap was.

Cantom, I really appreciate you posting these for me. I'm computer challenged and every time I've tried, I failed miserably.

loogie, I have no idea what they're really worth. The military version is literally unfired by anyone other than the factory. I picked it up years ago for what is now a ridiculously low price.

I also picked up the civilian rifle for a ridiculously low price in Chiliwack recently.

There have already been a few offers on both rifles, but they're not for sale.

Most people, just don't know what these rifles really are.

There are also more variants than I first thought. At least from communicating with Cantom and from seeing some of the rifles offered on this site for viewing and purchase, there seem to be.

Cantom, you seem to have quite a collection of pictures of many different variants and are in touch with the very knowledgeable "wheaty", Are you planning on putting together a treatise on EAL variants?

Skennerton seems to be sadly lacking information, other than that they really exist and are genuine milsurps.

Cantom you would be doing the milsurp crowd a great service by putting together whatever information you have and putting it on this and the "Milsurp Knowledge Library" site. You might even be able to glean or talk wheaty to help you.

I just want us all to know as much as we can find out about them, and the knowledge to be spread as far as possible (like on here:) ).

I think that's happening as we speak!

Wheaty knows a ton more about this subject than anyone else, I'm just hoping he updates his article, with pics like these and the newest info that's come to light.

I have definitely wondered that as have others...not to mention, why would the military want a limited cap mag while the civilian rifle got 10 rounds?? The whole thing seems backwards.
 
I would think that the military version was a lot more expensive to produce.

They were also intended as survival/hunting/protection rifles.

I wonder if the Rangers were issued them as an afterthought or they were designed for them.

I also wonder if the "civilian" model wasn't really intended for the Rangers in the first place, but seeing as there were so many of the "military" models and so few planes/vehicles that would need them, they issued them instead.

Cantom mentioned a very rare model in an email, it leads to so many different theories.

The models shown in other threads look to be original with the Lyman sights and checkering. If not they were professionaly done and look very good.

As I've said above, I've come accross several over the last several years. Many were altered, maybe.

I really wonder if EAL wasn't takeing orders for personal rifles. I also wonder how many weapons techs were modifying some of the originals as parting gifts from the service, just like so many of the No4 .22 rifles.
