Civilian M1 Carbine

The front sight is secured with a key and the pin. Moving it is going to take a bit of work.
You are going to have to remove the front sight to install your barrel band with lug. Even with a 18.6" barrel, a bayonet isn't going to fit. It was only at the very end of WW2 that carbines started appearing with the bayonet lugs.
The plum colour is just a result of the bluing, doesn't mean anything with respect to receiver quality.
Find out why the bolt is disengaging from the operating rod.

Yea lots of plum coloured rifles out there, happens with time.

If you make the rifle function 100% and clean up the rust. The resale value would probably triple, at least.

"http://forums.gunboards.com/showthread.php?126103-M1-Carbine-slide-problem" Best I could find with a quick search.

It may not be broken.
If I recall correctly, there is a disengagement notch for the op rod that allows you to strip the rifle. If you pull the op rod handle back while also exerting some force outwards to your right, it can come apart, as it is supposed to. It only goes straight back & forth in the slot while firing.

Some steel alloys to not respond well to certain bluing processes and will turn out plum colour, right from the start. When you get it refinished, it may turn out worse, if the gunsmith doesn't know what he is doing.

I don't think cutting 1.5 inches off the barrel will make it look much different. If you want it to look more GI, get a wood hand guard, a USGI sling + oiler, and some USGI Mag pouches on the butt stock would round it off nicely.

Thanks again to all for your input! Lone-wolf ... thanks for the link, I'll try and check all that, but just to cover all the bases I have also ordered the book that was linked to in the article.

If you need mags, check out tradeex, they have some 15 rounders pinned to 5, they are selling them for 8 bux a pop, however they are rusty and some my have small dents, i ordered 4 and they function perfectly.... you could probally clean them up and cold blue them or park them, i beleive they have 30 round mags as well, not sure on the price tho.

Be a good thing to try bluing something for the first time on.

Well, I've tried the cold blue stuff, and have never liked the results I get.
I think there are one or two smiths in Ottawa area who could hot-blue the entire shebang once I get it stripped and polished with steel wool.
I hear the glossier the metal is, the glossier the blueing will be... never had anything blued before so I really don't have a clue.
I'm game though... WTF, only paid $125 for it.
Also working on getting one of those unreal gorgeaous CMP stocks they sell (only..) to US citizens. Good thing I got's me a Yanqui 'cuz down there.
Oh... how about ammo...is it REALLY that frigging scarce????
Just wondering!

Now THAT'S what I'm talkin' about!

Nice job ianwd ... that's what I want my crappy old IJ to look like eventually.

Just has to look GI , but not ... ( just in case she ends up in the bottom of the lake). You know... the demon rum.
